Tómarúm – Beyond Obsidian Euphoria
March 26, 2025
The band has a seemingly endless plethora of tools at their disposal on the album. As complex as the album is, and as utterly ambitious as their vision was, it also has a binding cohesion to it. On sheer musicianship alone, it is simply beyond the standard rating system. It is a rare feat to craft something so technically precise yet emotionally gripping, so brutally intense yet undeniably elegant. This is not just an album for those who crave speed, aggression, and virtuosity—it is an album for those who seek an experience, one that pushes and pulls, devastates and soothes. It’s a masterclass in precision, power, and poise.

Buried Realm – The Dormant Darkness
February 25, 2025
this album is a nuclear ball of energy just waiting for someone to pick it up so that it can blast them into dust. It’s as if they doused the entire room in accelerant, lit the fuse, and watched the fire ignite. With the load of talent he has as well as his guests, you can hear how well it all works.

Kazea – I. Ancestral
February 25, 2025
This was a fascinating album whose sound mirrored the album cover, and I would love to hear more from the band. The cover shows a person with rags covering his face, and sticks for hair, and I think we can all relate to this image at times. The music was expertly blended without genre labels to reflect this image and these feelings.

Rioghan – Kept
February 24, 2025
The album effortlessly blends countless elements into a seamless, emotional experience. It thrives on contrast, where aggression and serenity, despair and hope, melody and dissonance all coexist without ever feeling forced. Few records manage to capture such an immense range of sonic textures and emotional landscapes without losing their cohesion, but this does so with effortless grace. It is a carefully crafted, beautifully chaotic masterpiece that demands to be felt as much as it is heard.

AntiMozdeBeast – The Alien Machine
January 21, 2025
This was a very personal album seen through the lens of one composer, and it challenges the very notion of what music even is. Although some of it is more like background ambiance, it did make me feel a peculiar way, which although is hard to describe, is the very point of music in the first place.

Úlfarr – Fornetes Folm His Crown Grows from His Skull
January 10, 2025
This was a difficult album to listen to for a few reasons. First, it was quite vanilla, it terms of the flavor spectrum of music. Second, the vocals were delivered in nearly the exact same way in every song. Third, the riffs were used so many times in the past. What resulted was a fairly bland album.

Moon Wizard - Sirens

Pro tip for this album: Headphones are a must. And not that crappy pair that came with your phone—I’m talking noise-cancelling, over-the-ear bad boys that will immerse you in the liquid smoke that is MOON WIZARD.

Corroding Soul – Corroding Soul
December 22, 2024
What truly elevates this album, however, is its ability to maintain its emotional weight throughout. Even in its most melodious moments, there’s a simmering undercurrent of tension and despair, a reminder of the genre's uncompromising roots. It’s an exhilarating, transformative experience that proves melody and aggression can coexist in perfect harmony.

GRAND

GRAND MAGUS

Warpstormer - Warpstormer
November 25, 2024
While the cover, and even their monicker, suggest a fuzzed-out Stoner trip, what we get is a ripping Thrash attack underpinned with the down-tuned sensibilities of Doom. Think THE SWORD gone Thrash.
review
Kildonan – Embers
November 23, 2024
This was an album with potential, and you can easily connect with the themes mentioned above. It was Black Metal really only in the sense of some of the backing vocal screams, and took on a more doomy quality for me.

review
Warm Gadget – Sorrows
November 18, 2024
As for the music, it is exactly I would expect from an Industrial band that has their feet firmly in the nineties like WARM GADGET. No new found experimantation, no Extreme Metal sidelines, Simple and effective, with hard beating drums, good heavy bass playing, piercing guitar riffs and a very disturbing voice.

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara – Origins
November 15, 2024
My biggest problem with the album is the label. I know, I know, I tend to be a bit of a gatekeeper. But when you call yourselves Progressive Metal yet you are pretty far from that definition, I take issue. The album wasn’t bad per se, but it fails to really get under your skin and light a fire. That fire could even be subtle emotion. I hate to be overly critical, but I am still scratching my head.
review
Shining – Feberdrömmar
November 5, 2024
New album? Well, that’s not exactly true, as the original version of this album, called “8½: Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd” is from 2013. It was an in-betweener for the band between albums. Apparently a good one, as it is being rereleased.
review
Bedsore – Dreaming the Strife for Love
November 1, 2024
This was an unusual album in many ways. The only real ode to Death Metal is in the vocals, and some harder elements in the music. The sound was wide open for me, and they made some very strong steps forward into the varied and sometimes odd world of Progressive Metal. I also enjoyed their dark brand of music immensely. This is definitely a band to keep an eye on.
review
Tethra – Withered Hearts Standing
October 28, 2024
There was a contrast between the clean and harsh vocals, as well as a nice balance between the emotions of anger and despair. I loved the female vocals especially, and would have liked to have heard more of them. The album brought up conflicting feelings for me, and that is always the mark of an interesting listening experience.
review
Black Oak County – III
October 23, 2024
This album doesn’t attempt to recreate the wheel, but what it does is present a genuine and honest energy from a group of rockers who take no prisoners. I can also hear how well the music would translate to a live audience. 12 songs was just a little too much in terms of overstaying its welcome, but it was a good listen.

Besra – Equilibrium
October 10, 2024
The four songs here had a lot of depth, but coerced me into taking the path into the dark that I was warned not to follow. It led me to a brook, where the water shined in the bring moonlight. But the more I looked around, it became obvious that this was a place of deep pain, and a place where you can unburden that pain for a while. When you leave, it returns, beguiling you to remain there forever alone.
