There are times when you take what is old and try to breathe some new life into it. This is what a musician must do when is dealing with an old Metal style, but must do the things in a way that shows personality. This is the factor that states if you're really a musician, or if you are a fan that is playing something. A musician plays and creates, a fan emulates, so for the second, it's better to stay in the middle of the public. This is exactly what the Australian trio DENOUNCEMENT PYRE is doing on their new album, "Black Sun Unbound".

Their musical style is an old and distorted way of Death/Black Metal, being far away from what HATE and BEHEMOTH do. They are into a 90s fashion, with a raw and brutal musical grasp. But the main difference between them and a legion of clones that we see (and hear) every day: they have a strong musical personality, because they do the thing in their own way without caring with the opinion of the others. Their music can sound fast or slow according with their musical ideas, but it's always good and aggressive. They use a raw and filthy sound quality, but this is not a problem. The rawness is balanced by the view that the fans must understand what they are playing, so it isn't a musical chaotic mass. So it is alright in this matter, besides they could have a better sound quality in some aspects (the guitar tunes could be cleaner, but not too much).

Of course that DENOUNCEMENT PYRE has a long way to go, and has musical potential to do better than that. But songs as the powerful and fast "Deathless Dreaming" (with some very good rhythmic changes and very good riffs), the nasty mid tempos and variations heard on "Wounds of Golgotha", "Black Sun Unbound" with its nasty slow tempos and very good drums and bass guitar work, the same elements that fills the abrasive weight of "Revere the Pyre" (this one with very good aggressive vocals), the fast and simple tempos of "Witness", and the excellent instrumental work on "Sophrosune" are little samples of how they can be a great force in the extreme Metal scene in the world. Musical identity and honesty are main driving forces for a Metal band, and DENOUNCEMENT PYRE's is filled with them. Listen to it and buy the CD, because illegal downloading is for sissies.
