Unplugged
Beaten To Death
When we are speaking about extreme Metal bands on Norway, the first idea that comes to our minds is that from those frozen lands, many great names arose on the 90s. Yes, we are speaking from the Black Metal invasion led by MAYHEM, BURZUM, and DARKTHRONE on the beginning of the 90s. But Norway is rich in many Meta styles, but the tradition is on extreme styles. But even things being in this way there, "Unplugged" is a very good surprise, because the Grindcore quintet BEATEN TO DEATH is anything you can think of, except conventional.
We can say that they have a very creative work. Yes, it's Grindcore, brutal and extreme, as NAPALM DEATH used to be on their earlier works, but there's some strange influences on their work, and even an experimental insight that is extremely clear. Yes, under their brutally cruel work, there's a thinking mind. And this is excellent. Strangely clear for a Grindcore album, their sound quality is clear and dry. OK, it's heavy and brutal, but clear. And some instrumental tunes that aren't conventional to their musical style. But it's very good in the way it is here.
Experimental and aggressive in both ways, on almost 21 minutes of duration they exhibit 13 very good songs. But to start, I dare to point to "Papyrus Containing The Spell To Summon The Breath Of Life Enshrined In The Collected Scrolls Of Sheryl Crow" (brutal and technical, with very good drumming and guitar riffs), the harsh attack of furious guitars called "Home of Phobia", the brutal and ironic "Don't You Dare To Call Us Heavy Metal" (very good drumming again, along with very good riffs and some melodies appears on them. And I'm calling you Grindcore, not Heavy Metal!), the homage "Greenway/Harris" (it only can be a homage to these guys, idols on the style, and pay attention to their guitar work and to these nasty high pitched vocals), the oppressive "Death To False Grindcore" with its nasty and violent guitars, and the ironic "Knulleviser For Barn".
Very good work, indeed!
