Having recently signed to Comatose Music, Sacramento, CA's WURM FLESH has released their crowd crushing debut "Excoriation Evisceration" on November 23rd, 2018. Having formed in 2011 WURM FLESH is definitely coming out of the gate primed, painted and polished to sweet death metal perfection. Seriously. Brace your Face people. What we have here is as much dark guttural distortion that we could ever ask for. The title track boasts an audio excerpt of a young woman giving her masochistic reasons for cutting herself. Which it sounds stupid until you hear it combined with the gruesome blasting of drums and low tuned guitars boosting the mid tones. This is true brutality in music. And as the music plays you can almost smell the distinguished stench of a nonsensical madman delivering slice after slice and the sweat that pours down his forehead.
Listening to "Morale Crusher" was like being pummeled in the chest as stomping kick drums that serve like a mallet bashing skin straight through the bone and into the cranial cavity. The vocals should be a template to the younger ones that come after us. This is how to lay the foundation for what makes a death metal vocalist great. It isn't just cookie monster bullshit. It's knowing when to breath, how to utilize the muscles in your throat and how to hold your jaw to allow the words to flow through your mouth like water through a tunnel. Imagine a top of the line garbage disposal. The syncopation of blades ripping chunks into oblivion. Now go ahead and drop tune the actual sound of it a couple of octaves to sub-bass frequencies. Oh, that rumble. On occasion, the rhythms end in quick leads from a guitar that swirl by you faster than a bullet from a gun. Pitch perfect and accented by an actual feeling of razors traveling through your ears.
"Unilateral Execution" begins with a symphonic walk of shame that sounds familiar. A death metal cliche, a sample from the movie Hellraiser. Well, at least it was a good one. This track does redeem itself for me as it features great blasting, great chug walking, dare I say it, it has a groove to it. It secreted anger, hate, aggression, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, explosive energy. While this is a short track it is the one that seems to have come together seamlessly. If you enjoy death growls similar to DYING FETUS, SUFFOCATION, crazy tempo changes, blast beats with a groove metal sounding kick, and music that inspires you to eat plastic and grind your teeth down to nothing, WURM FLESH is where it's at. Seriously though, you will have to burn off the pent-up energy after listening. Good audio quality and production for the most part. Everything is clear but a little too much occupying the mid frequency range. I would have to say "Excoriation Evisceration" is one of the best debut albums I've come across this year.
