Hailing from Australia WOLFMOTHER is a freshly reformed band and they are just releasing their third record, "New Crown" which is the first "new" material from the band since their 2009′s "Cosmic Egg".
Last year, the frontman / Songwriter / mastermind and founding member Andrew Stockdale quits in order to start a solo career, his debut album "Keep Moving" was published in 2013, but quickly after that, he was back with his WOLFMOTHER's bandmates to work on a new release, a ten track (or eleven) disc born under the moniker of "New Crown".
The album "New Crown" sees the trio consisting of Andrew plus bassist / keyboardist Ian Peres and Vin Steele on drums, they are back to basics, playing their seventies-tinted Psychedelic Rock enhanced by an organic vintage Stoner flavor with much ease and strong confidence, but my main concern, is that the new songs are still too predictable or too simplistic for my taste and even less creative than older material even if their style is authentic ("Heavy Weight"), I think the recipe is worn out.
That was a critic that I had already formulated years ago, this was my vision for their first self-titled and acclaimed album in late 2005 and it's again the same problem today, with the fact that the so call Classic Rock Revival wave seems to be finished exhausted and now totally empty of its early surprise FX... I think that their contenders SCORPION CHILD and RIVAL SONS are much more inspired.
Yet it remains that Stockdale & Co are still pretty good in recycling those ideas and sound from the past with a real obvious talent, the cover art is clearly representative of this genre set in this old fashion spirit, some cuts are quite good ("Enemy Is in Your Mind"/"Tall Ships"), some are just average ("How Many Times" / "She Got It") or plain bad ("Feelings") but the whole is finally enjoyable if you are in the right mood... In my opinion it's a draw situation, if the early fan boys will be pleased to hear this "New Crown", there is no chance that the skeptical will be ever convinced by the concept.
