Winds Of Torment - Delighting In Relentless Ignorance album cover

After last years incredible Out For Blood by SADUS, one more Death Metal release comes in from Mascot Records. To tell you the truth, even if this album is good (I haven't listened to it yet), I am 100% sure that it will no way match SADUS' destructive intelligence. I don't have to be so biased. I will to have to have a taste of it first.

This French Death Metal act was formed in 2000 and features Bertrand who is well known for his participation in the French Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore act BENIGHTED. WOT's only release before this album was a demo in 2004, something that seemed enough to secure them a contract with Mascot. Three years after their demo, WOT seem ready to release their first full-length effort and show the world what they can do.

To tell you the truth, I expected something much more brutal and a bit more extreme. WINDS OF TORMENT are just a Melodic Death Metal band and you know that when such a band falls into my hands, it has to be very good to convince me. Now, after some listening sessions I think I am ready to tell you if they have convinced me or not. First of all, I think that there is no point to comment anything regarding the production. Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore always has a very nice and polished production. The only times I comment stuff are when I face a band that belongs to this genre and the production sucks. Now regarding the music, WOT fortunately avoid the American Metalcore trend and deliver a more European approach to the genre. Based more on their Thrash and Death Metal influences and avoiding overusing melody and IRON MAIDEN style breaks; the band manages to overcome the listener's boredom syndrome, but unfortunately only for a while. Even if there are times that the band's Death Metal influences manage to get on top, it is obvious that the band still hasn't found 100% its personal sound.

The good thing is that the band shows many good stuff in this debut album and I think that some more work will make them a really competitive act. This album will definitely please Metalcore fans as well as Melodic Death Metal fans (maybe some more extreme Death Metal fans, too) but I will just wait for their next work. I want to see what this band is able to unfold in the near future.
