If you were to look inside the crystal ball today, would you see your future or just a wishful thought? And if you lent your hand to the fortune-telling gypsy, would you let her lead you to your destiny or down a path of lust?
When it comes to making a record - or any other piece of creative material - there is always a risk that it may not turn out the way that you've envisioned it. Be it due to wandering attention, tepid chemistry, or just plain artistic tribulations, albums can often start with a great idea and end in a pile of burning tape. Yet when a band has a clear direction in mind and stay true to their references, that is when prophesies of musical sorcery truly come to life, and on their debut album "Careful What You Wish For" the Louisiana Blues Rock quartet WHITE LIGHT CEMETERY channel the bonafide spirits or Rock 'N' Roll to show you exactly how that magic is done.
There are no charlatans here, no carnies trying to hustle your hard-earned dollars; this is pure fucking Rock. The band kicks things off with "Misery Loves Company", a cool, catchy Blues Rock number that showcases the band's deep southern roots and sweats with thoroughbred songwriting. "Sky River" then picks things up and goes for a more straightforward, SKYNYRD-esque approach, riding out at a brisk, highway pace before allowing those gritty Blues ghosts to return in slower, though righteously intense tracks like "Looking Out For Number One" and "Quit Work Make Music".
Honesty and simplicity dictate the protocol here. Solid riffs and exceptional compositional prowess turn this record from just another gleam in a Stoner's haze into a hot gust of wind that tears through a stale midnight bar. In addition to that, "Careful What You Wish For" also doesn't shy away from throwing down a few tonnes of heaviness into the mix, with tracks like "Better Days" and "Waiting" putting some extra chunky, iron rich meat on those bare Blues bones.
The production on "Careful What You Wish For" is fantastic, and manages to combine clarity and top-notch mixing with undertones of 90's Hard Rock/Stoner grit. The performances of the band members too make this record a thoroughly cohesive effort, for the outfit gels like they're going for an ultrasound. (Particular mention goes out to Shea Bearden, whose vocals simply tantalise with their style and mastery.)
Overall - fortunes be told, this one just may have a bright future ahead of it. WHITE LIGHT CEMETERY's "Careful What You Wish For" makes a stoner's dreams come true by using its southern spells to reach back into the pockets of greats like ZEPPELIN and CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and deliver a debut that is as mature as it is raucous.
