Vingulmork - Avgrunn album cover

From Norway with a lot of hate, VINGULMORK comes at us me in the most aggressive way I could have ever imagined (just kidding, from Norway I expect a lot of this). Yet here we have an EP with 4 songs that strikes a brilliantly good contrast between melody and rawness. For all general purposes, "Avgrunn" is a perfect example of all good things that can be wrapped up in a black metal album.

"Ytterst" is the opening track, and it's a very dark beginning. It begins with a really appropriate atmosphere and acoustic guitars, that lulls you in like prey.  then comes the blasts that blew my ears consistently. The vocals are really, really good, and far as as the musicianship, it's an outstanding effort that keeps the listener to wanting more and more. in full disclosure, I didn't really care for the fade at the end, but really no matter. It's a really good song.

"Eternally Swallow, Eternally Keep" is one of those classical black metal songs steeped in  pure fastness and rawness. This one has vocals from the start, fascinating tempos changes throughout and this amazing and constant riff that came born of the 90's. The solo here isn't anything that you would call a shredder of course, but fits perfectly with the aura that this song and album was made of. I loved it from the start to the end.

"Land of Nothing" has a very odd beginning, but comes to it's true form after about 10 seconds. This is one of those songs that makes you want to bang your head, with it's amazing drum work, and the constant rhythm that is pure Norway Black Metal. Some portions remind me some old EMPEROR stuff or some 1349. Here again, the vocals fit perfectly giving you the taste of hell.

The final track, "Døderlein", begins with some slow guitars, before transcending into mid-tempo black metal. Sure, it's a little cheesy, but I like cheesy music, and the band pulled it off compromising without the darkness from the other songs. iT'S a perfect tune to close any good black metal release.

This album has been a small taste of what those Norwegians are capable of, and I strongly recommend this EP.  Sometimes less is more, and they have hit the target accurately here, as it's one of those releases that makes you eager to hear more. I really loved the structure of every song, the concept and the delivery. Take my advice friends, seek this one out.
