Breath of Ages
Sapphire Eyes
Well, what many call Melodic Rock, others call Glam Metal/AOR, we can have an ample range of musical insights that can be infinite. How a band will sound is just a matter of the musicians combining their influences and how they'll express their personality. It's the reason that can explain why you can have both MOTLEY CRUE and BON JOVI under the same label. And I believe these words are enough to understand why we can call the Swedish sextet SAPPHIRE EYES as a Glam/AOR band. Their second album, "Breath of Ages", is a good piece of the genre.
Their music is truly accessible, in a way that names as BON JOVI, JOURNEY and others were on the 80's. Some old fashioned and moldy guys would call them a "false" or "sold" band for this reason. But their musical work is really excellent, done with personality, creating a fine mix of a solid rhythmic session, guitars with very good and melodic technical insight, fine keyboards parts and charming vocals. This formula isn't new, but on their hands sounds fresh and full of life. When we deal with this particular musical genre, you must know that a clean sound quality is what the band must search for, and they did it. The mastering was done in such way that all sounds clean and heavy as they must, bearing instrumental tunes chosen wisely, to balance melodies, musical accessibility and that essential touch of crudeness. Yes, it's really a very good work. And to give a special touch of class to the album, we have guests as Anette Olzon, Anette Johansson, Mike Andersson, Thomas Bursell, Fredrik Bergengren, Sven Larsson, Jörgen Persson, Ulf Widlund Edutainment and Thomas Löyskä bringing their individual talent to their songs.
If you need to put some energy and happiness in your heart, songs as "My Desire" (great melodies, showing a great work from the keyboards and guitars), the tender and Pop atmosphere of "I Don't Wanna Be Alone" (that can remind you of some moments from EUROPE due the excellent vocals and backing vocals' presence) and of "Endless Hope", the melodic blow given by "Never Again" (once more, the guitars are amazing) and "Chasing Dreams" (great chorus), and the mix of AOR with Pop Rock from the 80's heard on "Into Paradise". But their Rock version for "I Won't Leave With a Lie", a bonus track, is truly amazing, and in a personal opinion, would fit better as a main song from the album.
It's truly lovely, and if "Breath of Ages" is just their debut album, maybe in the second SAPPHIRE EYES will surprise many fans of the genre.
