Recorded live at the Roadburn venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands, this release opens with slow, moody, atmospheric instrumental number "Linceul d'hiver". The music of LES DISCRETS is varied and hard to pin down to a specific style at the best of times. This French ensemble blend Doom-laden Post-Rock style ambience, and overlay it with reverb-drenched vocals, to create a beautiful soundscape with an epic timeless quality.

While the first two tracks in this new live set, "Linceul d'hiver" and "L'Echappee" are slow and brooding, track 3, "Les Feuilles de l'Olivier" picks up the pace somewhat, and shows that there is another level to these compositions.

The guitar-led sound of LES DISCRETS is sometimes labelled as "Post Black Metal", however the melody and much slower tempos involved, mixed with the melancholic vocals which are sang cleanly as opposed to screamed or growled, give the whole thing a softer edge. This live album goes to show, however, that while these sounds may be created with the help of large amounts of studio equipment, it is also possible to recreate them live, filling a large hall with the audio structures they perform.

These melodies I have found are not ones to listen to in-depth; rather they should just be played and be allowed to wash all over the listener and be absorbed. The technicality on display is fantastic and melodic, and every song could work just as well instrumentally as with the overlayed vocals.

LES DISCRETS have a fantastic grasp on shifting the pace and dynamic of the music, bringing each song up and down with a very natural flow which holds suspense within the melody and eventually reaches climactic levels before being rounded off.

For people interested in more interesting sounds than standard Metal and Rock acts, the variety of styles and the experimentation available on this album should pique your interest and give you something to freshen up your music collection.
