The diggers are back in (or from) the grave, right? Who'd imagine the German survivors' monumental Heavy Metal Breakdown debut (back in 1984) resembling that up-to-date due to the release of this CD single; an appetizer due to the quartet's early 2007 upcoming release entitled Liberty Or Death.
When you get a promo CD for review, you must get the 'complete' promo CD; meaning, any media attached too. Hence the brief review refers only to the CD single itself and not to the bonus DVD that's gonna 'escort' the CD single release (all I found out was that the visual 'bonus' comes off  the band's appearence at the Rock Machina 2001 fest).
The song Yesterday is no new tune. It originally appeared on the track listing of the Heavy Metal Breakdown album; a slow Metal tune of the era. The 2006 version here is all 'cleaned up' to meet today's requirements. Thus, post-Tunes Of War (1996) followers will like this one - many of them could/would not stand the monolithic sound of Digger's first three albums, anyway - while there's no chance 'old school' fans will show similar sympathy in relation to the original. Still, the take is 'true' and 'metallic' enough. To add: the 'orchestra' version - would this be a real orchestra or the production/mix is that delusive? - shows some sentimental personality, but nothing more...
The remaining tracklist consists of a brand new track called The Reapers Dance, which sees a very good mid-to-fast tempo Metal cut with a live-friendly refrain, plus a cover version of the Led Zeppelin classic No Quarter (previously released in the Locomotive Records 2001's The Metal Zeppelin - The Music Remains The Same tribute album to the Zeps). If you've not heard this cover version so far, it's a good example of the mystical influence of the greatest(?) Rock band of all time in the Metal genre.
This EP is issued to set the ground for the Liberty Of Death release? I dunno. Since three out of four tunes were already demonstrated - one way or another - in the past, there's no need for a Metal fan (omit the GD maniacs) to get the single. Wait: a DVD disc is added as a bonus! Not aware of its content (see paragraph #2), maybe this is a good reason for getting the combo. As for the future scenario: the vocals, the guitars and the rhythm section in The Reapers Dance have already prepared my ears for the full 'dish' in January 2007. Grave Digger mean Metal and I wanna see it happen.
