Lifeless Allurement
Evoked
As I say many times, the past still awakens passion for many Metalheads. Of course, I love the past as well, there's nothing wrong with that. The mistake is to think that only the past has values in terms of Metal. This is a great mistake, the same one that feeds the brains of many to play the styles of music that are already eroded, without inputting some freshness and new energy on it. This is the case of the duo EVOKED, from Germany. You can get the right idea hearing "Lifeless Allurement", their newest EP.
Their musical work is good, based on the earlier years of the Death Metal uprising on the 90s, especially on the Floridian Death Metal, like DEATH and something from PESTILENCE. Their greatest mistake: to try to be as these ancients. Indeed, they are too near of the earlier Death Metal bands, and although you can feel the band's personality pulsing, it's hidden under a great pile of musical clichés. This is the wrong way to follow, the way of the weak and of those who can't construct their own musical way.
The sound quality is not as bad as it seems, because the work doesn't sound moldy or dirty as in those times. The rawness of their music comes from the instrumental tunes, that aren't a great problem. You can also understand what the band is playing without problems. Their greatest weakness is really that the duo seems to try to be a Death Metal band from the 90s, because we aren't in the 90s anymore. You just can't add any value to what DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, UNLEASHED, DEATH, OBITUARY, DEICIDE, CANNIBAL CORPSE and other bands did. It's an offense, to be honest.
"Mangled, Torn & Eaten" is fast and brutal, "Swallowed by the Void" has that slow and bitter tempos contrasting some faster ones, "Disintegrated Mind" is a traditional fast song, "Tremendous Existence" has some Thrash Meta parts (with some slow moments), and "Lifeless Allurement" is just another ordinary Death Metal song as we heard thousand times before. We can feel that they have talent, but they lack their own personal work. I hope that they can improve in the future.
