The Ravens Nest

Hungary seems to be an ever-growing market for metal bands but for some reason only few of them make it abroad. I don't really know why since there seems to be a lot of good bands in this country. One of them is EVERWOOD (yes like the TV show but much cooler).
EVERWOOD released their debut album a couple years ago again from Burning Star Records. If I'm not mistaken the band's debut was also the label's debut! Well after two years it seems that band sides have progressed a lot! I had the chance to listen Mind Games prior during this review and I can say with a lot of confidence that the band has taken a huge leap ahead.
The band's debut was a honest but a bit average symphonic / progressive piece of work with a really good production and stunning artwork. It contained some really good tunes but it was obvious that the band was struggling for identity.
And identity they found in The Raven's Nest! EVERWOOD not only manage to boost their sound by enriching it with a lot of elements but they also sound really loose and eager to play with sound colors often forbidden to prog bands! Of course their charismatic and distinct vocalist really gives them a lot of help in this matter.
The Raven's Nest is a concept album. It's actually a three short stories concept in one album! I don't have the lyrics but the CD includes a very interesting multimedia segment that also seems quite explanatory!
The Raven's Nest is a colorful album. From the modern Leaves Of November to the chill out vibe of Behind You Smile its obvious that the band is in the mood for experimentation. Did they drop their symphonic part? No and what better way to manifest it that the stunning power ballad Like A Miracle!
With a bold production and again amazing artwork The Raven's Nest simply seems to be one of the best prog releases for 2007.
