EMPTY TREMOR is a progressive Metal band. I am not exactly sure how to review this album. It is all over the place. The first song starts out with some very weird time signatures. It's as if they didn't know how to start out the song. I am referring to the first minute of the song ("Breaking The Mirror") when a riff is followed by an awkward silence, only to start back up again. It is odd. I have come to a conclusion that progressive Metal isn't one of my favorite genres!

The lyrics seem to be a reading of words from a book rather something meant to be a song. To me, songs are supposed to rhyme or at least be cohesive. I don't see any of that here. It is hard to enjoy something that seems to be so random or even like improvisation.The songs vary in length but tend to lead more towards the five to ten minute mark. Believe me, when a song is odd and over ten minutes long, it is less than enjoyable. The song "Autumn Leaves" is a perfect example of how they just plug in and play. It doesn't seem to be any more than that.

As far as the productions goes, that part is solid. The band seems to have a penchant for complicated song structures with random elements that are captured with precision by the producer. I cannot fault him for the actual song content. As if the all over the place music wasn't enough, we are assaulted by a singer that tries at times to sound like Steve Perry from JOURNEY. The difference between these two bands is night and day with JOURNEY at least capable of structuring a song so that it seems to be an actual song instead of "a night at the improv". If you like your music complex and all over the map, then you might enjoy this. If the entire genre of progressive Metal is anything like this, I will have to make absolutely sure to skip any further offerings. Yes the music is technical, I cannot deny that, but it takes more than that for me to get into a song.

Overall, the sound quality cannot be faulted, and the playing is fine. The singer is good and does as I said, a good version of Steve Perry, but I simply cannot recommend this album by these things alone.
