Ember Sun - On Earth and Heaven album cover

EMBER SUN is a solo project born in 2021 of Lorthar from Greece, playing atmospheric Funeral Doom Death with influences of the Gothic scene. The band is a mix of all the music styles haunting Lorthar's temperament. On earth and heaven is a hymn of solitude and sorrow. It Is the fear of reaching our end...the despair of not seeing again all those who loved and hated...the incompatibility of no consciousness...the sorrow of not to see the dawn again. The album contains six tracks.

"Swallowed Back into my Sorrow" opens the album. It begins with soft but ominous tones, seguing into a lumbering heavy riff with brutal accents. The Gothic elements are within the clean vocals. The vocalist sports a baritone range and his voice echoes within the weighted, doomy riff. "Respawn" is a shorter track that begins with a bit of a faster-moving riff, still with that darkness looming overhead. Like a sky full of grey clouds, there is little light that is getting through. The vocals here are harmonized. "On Earth and Heaven" is another lengthy track, opening with clean guitar tones and murky background ambiance. The vocals are done in layers, with harsh and clean mixed. The slow riff is augmented with brief moments of ambiance, as well as (simulated?) strings.

"Ember Heart of Me" is a shorter song, desperately trying to let some light into your darkened prison. The Gothic vocals make a return, combined with a very emotional guitar solo that is fairly rare in this type of music. "The Chapel" opens with some heavy drum strikes and more of that mysterious background ambiance. A crow squawks in the background, as cymbal strikes become more pronounced. There are no vocals in this harrowing track. "My Essence Fades in Time" closes the album; a ten-minute beast. It begins with another slow moving riff and clean vocals mixed with harsh. It drains all sense of hope that you might have in the world, in the manner very fitting with the album title.

Overall, this is an excellent album, with some interesting chord progressions. Doom Metal is often riff based, and this album is no exception, but Lorthar keeps them fresh. It will always make you feel that there is nothing good in the world, and that old-school romanticism kicks in, causing you to feel more sharply the deadened emotions that you bury deep within. Well, the door is opening, so stand back and let the chips fall where they may.
