Dirty Thrills - Heavy Living album cover

Hailing from London, UK, Blues Rock quartet DIRTY THRILLS present their second full-length release titled "Heavy Living." The album contains eleven tracks. "I'll be With You" leads off the album, with a sleazy and sexy guitar riff, and the crooning vibrato-laden vocals of singer Louis James, son on ex-MOODY BLUES singer Nicky James. I get a bit of a grungy vibe from the song. "Law Man" has a similar pattern in that it is driven by a dirty riff and features more high flying vocals that exude soul and personality. "Hanging Around" is a mid-tempo song with a bit more weight and punch. There are also some touching moments in the track, pushing some more feeling into the fold.

"Lonely Soul," as you might expect from the title, is a slower and more reflective track. Something about the sounds reminds me of THE BLACK CROWS. In these softer moments, you really need to depend on a strong vocal performance, and James delivers that here for sure. A soulful belting of lead guitar doesn't hurt either. "No Resolve" really brings blows off the roof and brings the house down. The amount of passion and drive that oozes from vocals and guitar in particular is something that will punch you in your gut. "Rabbit Hole" has the kind of memorable riff that reminds me of the electric blues of early LED ZEPPELIN. Things really heat up when those vocals hit the upper ranges.

"Get Loose" closes the album. It's a fast moving track with a soulful swing, and a lot of energy and charm. The clapping adds to the effect that it's a song to have fun with, as the title suggest. Overall, I found the strength of the album to be in the vocal delivery of Louis James, and the bluesy, raw riffs of guitarist Jack Fawdy. Sometimes the bass guitar got a bit lost in the mix, but at the same time the songs wouldn't seem to support too much of a rogue effort so it all came together nicely. If you're a fan of that old school soul and swing, give this album a whirl.
