Descendency - Generate the Genocide album cover

Every once in a while, there will come an album from a scene of generic bands that is actually worth something. Modern Thrash Metal is one of those "scenes" where bands either try to sound like SLAYER or they make it big enough for their music to become overly produced, therefore losing one key element of Thrash: its raw production that makes it more aggressive. Enter DESCENDENCY, a band that, well, is just awesome.

Listening to their debut album, "Generate the Genocide", it is clear that a lot of early 1990s Thrash vibes are exhibited. A lot of Thrash Metal bands from the 1990s have a very groovy element added to the already thrashing rhythms. Bands like EXHORDER, DEVASTATION and ANTIDOTE come to mind when listening to this record, especially the former of the three. However, unlike EXHORDER, DESCENDENCY have a little less attitude in their music (unless you count the NOLA band's latest single). Despite not having as much attitude as a band known for its attitude, these guys still know how to deliver a punch.

Starting with the groovy riffing and captivating heaviness of the first few songs, it is already evident that this band does not mess around. "Opaque" and "Arduous March" both have sinister breakdowns reminiscent from those on EXHORDER's "The Law" from 1992. Outside of breakdowns, the groovy riffs come in with "Island Off the Coast of Earth" and "Human Broth". Different sections of each track twist into a mass of groove and rhythm. Not to mention the progressive, even sometimes jazzy, leadwork done on the instrumental "Hate Prop 1.98-4". This side of the band is not often touched, but it is very welcome when it surfaces.

One thing that stands out with this record is the songwriting. There are not many Thrash Metal bands that can write a seven-minute song that is captivating throughout its entirety. This is yet another similarity to the fathers of Groove Metal, EXHORDER; their longer songs are interesting at every turn, throwing curveballs at the listener and creating riffs technical enough to satisfy any ADHD-diagnosed Thrash Metal fan. With fantastic songwriting, killer hooks and riffs, DESCENDENCY is what today's Thrash Metal movement needed. I cannot find much wrong with this album that isn't nitpicking. If you're a fan of groovy Thrash Metal with nice progression and heavy rhythms, look no further than these guys.
