BLACK YET FULL OF STARS formed in 2012, in Italy. Self-described as Symphonic/Power/Progressive Metal, the band presents their debut album, "Black Yet Full Of Stars," which contains eight tracks, and about a 38 minute listening experience. When a track starts softly and with piano, my interest is always peaked. "Lightborn" open with a pensive melody and some Symphonic elements can be heard. It's not long however before the main riff slams in a break-neck speed. The heavily-laden vibrato of singer McBee is strong and commanding. I hear a Power Metal structure here for the most part, but the time changes and Symphonic elements compliment this sound nicely.

"Golden Child" is considerably shorter in length but still boasts a strong sense of songwriting. They have a flair for the grandiose, which is appropriate for the style, but keep the track accessible to the listener as well. "Face To Face" had some more Progressive leanings, which are enjoyable. The Symphonic elements remain strong and once again it's the clean but snarly vocals of McBee that really provide direction for the song. The instrumentation here is very tight as well. I feel like they really hit their stride with this track, and it is one I would highlight for sure. "Lords Of Silence" is another heavy-hitting Progressive track that shows off some of the band's chops. I get a strong SYMPHONY X feeling here; the dark nature of the song, the synergy of the instrumentation, and the connectedness of all parts. The vocal lamentations at times provide some strong melody as well.

"Tempesta" is the six-minute closer. Thunder-claps and ominous, marching notes lead to a dirge of sorts that speak of an epic tale of conquests and defeats. Just the eight amount of symphony support the overall sound. As a debut, this Italian quartet have done a really nice job on their foundation. They have a strong sense of their craft, and the production is very clear. Musicianship is on fully display here as well, though they do not let this overpower the songs themselves. Progressive/Power/Symphonic fans will find much to their liking here in my opinion, and the sky is the limit for them from here.
