Black Space Riders - D:REI album cover

Somewhat odd and definitely unique, BLACK SPACE RIDERS have some experimental sounding moments, but just when I was a bit lost as to what I was listening to they suddenly had an almost MASTODON-like quality to some of the songs (which kept me listening).

The opening track has some nature-spacey sound-thing that had me wincing at first thinking 'oh no' and then some out there guitar followed and just as I was about to kill the song Boom! The guitars and band kicked it in loudly. Now, they do have that sludge-gloom feel to parts of the music but they certainly have a sound all their own. I even had some T-REX moments in there with the MASTODON moments as points of comparison.

"Bang Boom War (Outside My Head)" comes at you with distorted sludge sounding guitars but they have a style that keeps you into it and that is when you begin to appreciate what you are listening to, in other words, it took a couple plays and it grew on me quickly.

It is hard to put any one particular genre label on them and that is good in my mind in this day of sub-genres gone wild. They have that punk-vibe sprinkled throughout and I must say that alone is what kept me in the game on this album. Think also maybe early David Bowie if he had more distorted guitars and you may start to get the idea.

All over, it is not your typical AOR music nor is it like really anyone else that I can truly compare them to side-by-side, my advice is if you like new music with unique sounds and takes on the world then this one may be what you crave.
