Hmmm, one more release coming straight from Mascot Records. I want to be optimistic since in my humble opinion Mascot usually releases pretty good Metal works (I am still worshiping the incredible Out For Blood that SADUS released last year). To tell you the truth, I do not know shit about who SOULDRAINER are. It seems that I will have to become an internet explorer for one more time to find some useful information about this band.
Hmmm, it seems I found some interesting stuff. SOULDRAINER comes from Ostersund, Sweden. The band was born in 2000 and features members from well-known bands. To be more precise, Klitkou is CHASTISEMENT's singer, Malkki is playing drums for THE EQUINOX OV THE GODS (Dlimi is TEOTG's ex guitarist). Here is something I read in the booklet. The drums in this album are played by Nils Fjellstrom. Malkki joined SOULDRAINER after Nils quit the band in October 2005.
After three demo releases, the band managed to sign a contract with Mascot to release its debut album, which means the album I am reviewing right now. The history of the band's members as well as their origin helps me imagine what they play. They play a kind of music I do not really like. SOULDRAINER play a style of melodic Death Metal. You know, brutal vocals, keyboards, guitar melodies and whiny down tempo groove. Thank god, this band does not use female vocals (except from some tracks). The fact is that the music that SOULDRAINER play has already been played by many bands and in some cases much better. MY DYING BRIDE for example are the kings of melodic Death Metal. You know, this melancholic thing with the brutal vocals (hahahaha)! SOULDRAINER is not just a wannabe band, they do not seem to intend to take MY DYING BRIDE's throne. The thing is that this band does not have anything new to offer. They are not bad, but they are not even so good to make you like them. One word that can describe Reborn is mediocrity.
I do not know if this album is going to be loved by fans of the genre, but the only thing I know is that I didn't like Reborn for sure! I do not want to be severe since it is just their debut album so I will just wait for a possible second full-length work.
