Nails - You Will Never Be One Of Us album cover

It's like getting punched in the mouth over and over again! This is the third full length album from this American Grindcore band. Clocking at a little over twenty minutes, this is pure unbridled energy. I listened to the album more than once on my way to work and my right ear still hurts! It's just mind-blowingly fast and intense. They are the new kings of the genre and have paid homage to the grandfathers of the genre like NAPALM DEATH and early CARCASS. This album shows a more technical side of the band compared to their previous efforts. With the departure of lead guitarist Andy Saba after their second album, a lot of fans were wondering if they would keep progressing towards the Death Metal genre but this album is a bit of a departure. They go back to their Grindcore roots and blast beats are all over the place. They do have a tendency to have more technical breakdowns and solos that remind me more of Progressive music than anything else. Todd Jones adds his own twist with some technical wizardry.

They also dive head first in a lot of crossover stuff. I can safely say that some songs (especially ''Life is Death Sentence'') sound like good old DISCHARGE. I could almost hear ''Protest and Survive'' in the background of the aforementioned song. They have added some Hardcore Metal elements that add a distinguished flavor to some of the songs (even though most of the songs are less than 1 minute long!). There are three songs that really embark on other facets of the band. They departed a wee bit from their traditional genre and did some things radically different. ''You Will Never Be One Us'' sounds like a mix of early SEPULTURA and FEAR FACTORY. The guitar work reminded me a lot of Dimebag Darrell from PANTERA. Even though it's barely more than a minute long, it's far more technical that anything they have done before.

''Violence is Forever'' sounds like early SLAYER. Let me rephrase that, it sounds like the covers album SLAYER did a number of years back when they covered Hardcore and Punk Bands! This is a shout out to a lot of the early crossover acts in Metal and I felt it was quite a departure from the rest of the album. Last and not least is the last song of the album ''They Come Crawling Back''. Clock at over 8 minutes, this was radically different from anything they have ever done in their short career. It's slow and doomy and reminded me of ISIS and NEUROSIS. It's a very slow song (far from the frenetic pace of what we are used to hear from these guys). Really nice way to end the album and makes me excited to think what direction they will take next album!
