Sunflower Dead - It's Time To Get Weird album cover

Chained by shock, emerged to rock, celebration of the mutation, showing off the freaks of nature of Alternative Metal. Certainly phrases that would do justice with yet another act that is aspiring to become the next of the next. Setting their plan into motion with theatrics and impressive stage act, the Californian SUNFLOWER DEAD became no stranger. As if it didn't got in the first place, the band issued their new album "It's Time To Get Weird", via the independent Bloody Bat Records. It is not a bumpy as it looks, but it is sure smooth as it can be.

Clasping into the US natural fascination with the likes of Nu or Alternative Metal, I believe that SUNFLOWER DEAD draw a bit more appeal to the table other than the common riff based tunes. Walking the walk of mainly DISTURBED but also taking a few tops from the imagery, toughness and groove of ROB ZOMBIE and FIVE FINGERS DEATH PUNCH, I was glad to hear that these guys entrusted their hands into melodic ingredients, especially guitar and vocals, to spice up their grooves. Furthermore, the melodies contributed to the amazing vocals that ascertained hook-laden, easy going, songs that will stick to you. In a way, the band's harmonious intent is the basis for the success of this album, added also by a well-made sound production that is not awfully polished but felt somewhat more natural.

Such as it may, "It's Time To Get Weird" contains good standard hits, some which could easy be semi-radio friendly, depends on the station policy of course. "You're Dead To Me" and "I'll Burn It" are the next in line heavy hitters, smashing up groove but with the exquisite touch of the vocals and lead guitar notes that truly made a difference. "Through The Blackest Eyes" and "The Rain" are what you would call subtle tunes, somewhat a bit emotive than the others, possibly "Nothing" can follow through in the same terms, a kind of short balladry that is keeping a measure of suspense to what comes next.

Coming from a different scene of Metal, SUNFLOWER DEAD maybe on their way for the top of Shock Rock / Metal, streaming with the vibe of the late 90s and 00s, their efforts could go to places.
