Yobrepus - Mycelium Days album cover

Hailing from Krypton, Norway, YOBREPUS plays Alternative Rock with Progressive influences. It started as artist Mats Jørgen Sivertsen's musical hobby project back in 2006. Members today are Mats (vocals, keys, guitar), Øyvind Rognerud (keys), Vegard Weyergang Vartdal (bass) and Paal Urdal (drums). "Mycelium Days" contains six tracks.

The title track opens the album, and it's a beast, at over 22 minutes in length. As suspected, it has a long lead-in...four minutes before the guitar makes itself known. The vocals are somewhat ethereal and approaching the half-way mark, it is still building slowly. About ten minutes in, you can hear some structure from the guitars. But they don't always connect with the vocals in the way that they should. There is definitely a melancholy tone to the song. Some light keys mix in, but this is a sad affair overall. A heavier riff makes its presence known, then there is a long fade-out.

"What if..." opens with some clean guitar tones, and more of those dreamy, melancholic vocals. It has a little more presence, but I'm not sure I would even call this Alternative Rock...it's more like Indie music to me, but that is neither here nor there. "Down" is a shorter, four-minute song, with a more linear sound. A calm and charming melody takes the lead here, mostly from the vocals. It has a more structured sound, with clear verses and choruses. "Step up" opens with soft key notes. From there, a little more sound joins the fold, but overall it's very light. The sound drops to nearly nothing after the half-way mark, and then fades away from there.

"Wangari" is another song with structure. The vocal chants over the old school organ notes are quite odd. "Piao" closes the album. It's a quick four-minute song with a long lead-in. Following a full minute, piano notes combine with melancholy vocals. It's like a swan song of sorts, capping the album with a doleful ending. Overall, I'm not sure what to make of the album as a whole. It barely registers as Rock music, just not having enough presence of instrumentation. As I mentioned before, parts of the album are quite pretty, but I would call this more Indie type music.https://yobrepus.bandcamp.com/
