I didn't know that  Jari Mäenpäa had created his own band. Wintersun is a very pleasant surprise and Wintersun is a very good album that will not pass unnoticed.
Let me first introduce this band to you. Wintersun is a new Finnish band created by Ensiferum's singer,  Jari Mäenpäa. Their music could be described as good Viking Metal, epic and majestic, glorious and melancholic, exactly as it is meant to be played. As their basic influence I can discriminate Ensiferum and some of their other influences must be Bal Sagoth and Moonsorrow.
Their rhythm sections are sometimes based on Speed Metal and sometimes on Black Metal. They are very good and they create a very steady structure on which they build their songs and all the melodies. The solos are very technical and sometimes they remind me of Timo Tolkki's solos. Their melodies remind me of the bands that I mentioned above and their atmosphere is full of Finnish melancholy and dark emotions.
It is good that there are so many bands which have chosen to follow this path and play this kind of Metal. I hope that they will continue what they have started and that we will soon listen to a new Wintersun album..
Until then, let them take you away and journey you to the enchanting forests, lakes and mountains of Finland. You will surely not be untouched.
