"Threads of Unknowing" is a journey which resurrects concepts on earlier display and summons evermore progressive and technical compositions. Mastermind and guitarist/vocalist Garrett Johnson and guitar virtuoso Phil Tougas share both vocals and lead guitar duties here, while bass god Damon Good weaves both fretted and fretless bass mastery and drummer Charlie Koryn encompasses not only speed and brutality, but a fine mix of precision and improvisation from jazz fusion. The end result is VOIDCEREMONY and their signature sound: Time-melting Death Black Fusion. With an apt cover painting representing the lyrical and philosophical vision of an ancient and forgotten future, VOIDCEREMONY itself seems to be operating on an alternate Death Metal timeline that once made itself known, but only briefly, and was soon left behind for more commercial appeal. Yet the portal has been re-opened.

The album has six songs, and the title track is the first. It's Tech Death, alright. The guitars rhythms are tight and the vocals guttural, but the thread of melody that runs through the song is surprising and pleasing. The chaotic passages are chocked as full as they can get. "Writing in the Façade of Time" has a dissonant set of melodies among the thick and overgrown branches of Death Metal. The leads are excellent, but don't necessarily fit with the music per se. This sort of unconventional way of songwriting can go either way for fans. I appreciate their abstractness, however, because it makes for a more personal listening experience.

"Abyssic Knowledge Bequeathed" rolls out of the gates with a deadly purpose. The guitars build in layers with bass in tow, and drums echoing them. The bass takes the lead at one point as well. Like a lot of Tech Death, the bassist is often an excellent musician, and that is certainly the case here. "Entropic Reflections Continuum" is another dark song with many discordant sounds. The bass keeps flying all over the canvas, leaving bright paint streaks where he once was. Again, the leads are well done but don't really fit with the music. This kind of disconnection is readily heard in the genre but isn't pleasing to the ears in my opinion. "At the Periphery of Human Realms" is a shorter song that begins with some really nice, melodic leads, augmenting the clean guitars underneath. Rumbles of thunder can also be heard, and I like the variation so far on the album.

"Forlorn Portrait: Ruins of an Ageless Slumber" closes the album; an eleven-minute opus. Chaotic passages open the song, but it is not without some bright peaks of melody amidst the murky layers of music. Try to keep up with all the changes here, it's nearly impossible. Their transitions in and out of various passages is keen and sharp. This is a complex song that showcases the band's diversity. Overall, I really liked the album. The band showed their songwriting skills and showcased their musicianship without detracting from the album, and there is enough variation to keep the listener on his toes.
