Venomous Maximus - The Mission album cover

With the deliverance of the following simply produced second EP the highly VENOMOUS MAXIMUS from the Southern USA, put their giant foot between the drug induced Stoner Hard Rock and 70s oriented fuzzy like Heavy Metal. "The Mission", on its six tracks, displays the classic moments of early BLACK SABBATH while their modern followers HIGH ON FIRE join the gloomy venture.

VENOMOUS MAXIMUS seemed to be a little more energetic than 70s like bands that took upon themselves to generate vintage music. The EP's themes are pretty interesting and through the songs maintain a sort of suspense. Chris Higgins at the vocals seemed to fit the music like a glove with a voice that is merely a flat line with almost no emotions but who really needs those here other than maybe despair and pessimism. As for the music, it is straight and to the point. The guitar work is in a good level and hit the right notes that marked the genre the band is playing. The rhythm section sounded tight more or less while the bass, as it was in 70s SABBATH, maintained dominance. Yet, I think that this band has a way to go before coming out victorious.

Some of the songs on "The Mission" are great prospects that with the right production, and I don't mean the sound alone, will be glorious. I am merely pointing out songs like "The Rider", "The Gift" and "Give It Up Witch". The latter has some fine outputs that were classic but it also had section where it seemed that the band wandered while trying to continue the wicked story.

With my summary I claim that VENOMOUS MAXIMUS is a capable bunch of guys that admires the classic years while inducing their music with vintage elements. "The Mission" has some potential to come close to gods of Stoner music with its accessibility and simplicity.
