Unreal Overflows - Latent album cover

I never had the chance to listen to Technical Melodic Death Metal (kinda long genre name), so with this new UNREAL OVERFLOWS LP, I lost my TMDM-virginity, and it was a journey with a reasonable amount of pleasure.

The group came up with a very self-aware sound for this record. They really limited themselves (in a good way) to a certain style they aspired to work with and moved within that range. The music on here is very guitar-centered, basically every other instrument is has a supportive role, and the guitar work is magnifice. Not many memorable riffs, but the album is still full of great melodies, scale-work and is fit for the leading-role. The vocals - unlike most Death Metal vocals - are pretty solid. I kinda disliked them at first, but by the third track, I could actually get into and somewhat appreciate it. There are some failed ideas though, like the little bass solos in "Human Obscenety State" and "Abiding Decay" feel off and just not fitting for the song, especially the tone, which feels weak and hollow. I also missed some "brutality" from the instruments, you know, breakdowns, hard-hitting riffs, I feel like both Melo and Tech-Death have that, so why not TMDM? It would have made for a much fuller experience as a whole. But that's about it for all negative aspects of "Latent".

One last thing about the record before the verdict, the 9 tracks keep a consistent level of quality. This may or may not be something you'll like, I personally wouldn't have minded one or two bangers, even if it meant some songs of lower quality. All in all, the only thing this record REALLY has going for it are the guitars, so if you're a guitarist, you'll probably enjoy this way more than I did, I just thought it was a decent effort. Didn't hate, but wouldn't come back to it.
