Sol Invictus - The Devil's Steed album cover

Sol Invictus means the unconquered sun, or more fully, Deus Sol Invictus the unconquered sun god was a religious title applied to three distinct divinities during the later Roman Empire. Their discography if I am not mistaken dates back to 1987 with their Against The Modern World mini-EP. Sol Invictus actually is an English Pagan Folk and neoclassical group fronted by Tony Wakeford.
The Devil's Steed is the first release of Sol Invictus (the unconquered sun) after the recent collapse of World Serpent Records. It finds Tony Wakeford, one of the founding members of Death In June and one of the cult musicians of the European pagan folk scene (often called Apocalyptic or Post Apocalyptic Folk scene), playing guitar, keyboards and singing, accompanied by an assortment of trumpets, recorders, percussion and violins. Wakeford has described Sol Invictus as a cabaret band from Hell for the fin-de-siecle.
Just to make a small history lesson here, we can say that the emperor, Aurelian, introduced an official cult of Sol Invictus in 270 AD, making the sun-god the premier divinity of the empire. You can find elements of various musical aspects here even a dark-Rock style. This release will even satisfy some of the diehard old school Sol Invictus fans. The band's playing creates magnificent sonic landscapes and puts the listener in a mood where internal catharsis and tranquility are about to settle down. Listening to this music can also be considered as a fine way to let off some steam and stress from living in modern towns.
Sol Invictus garnish their music with traditional folk instruments, such as fiddles or violins playing majestic tunes and melodies in a kind of progressive /  experimental way on certain tracks. Their music and whole attitude is rather difficult to understand, especially for a Metal freak. Due to the band's strong folk approach though there are many Skyclad type fans who would adore it.  Melancholy is also obviously present in this album. The artwork was designed by Tor Lundvall. The lyrics are of high quality and really match well with the music.
Sorry, albums of this type can not really be rated!
