She Must Burn - She Must Burn album cover

SHE MUST BURN are a truly unique band, their music is an interesting combination of genres and ideas, combining black metal atmospheres with Metalcore riffs and melodies, with a wide variety of vocals.

"Under The Shadows" starts with "Ascension", an instrumental intro. "Ascension" gives us a very modern sound, with oldschool black vibes, could say it's a little Oriental, gives me the same chills you have when you think of Egyptian gods. I could imagine a mechanical version of the Egyptian God Ra ascending from below earth and destroying everything in his way with "Ascension" in the background.

"Possessed" Starts with this Egyptian vibe I was talking about and immediately goes into a mixture of Metalcore riffs and black metal vibes which is what makes this band unique, I think this is the first time I see such a combination and I just LOVE it. Joseph has a huge variety of vocals, fitting the band exactly, when it's needed he's a Core vocalist and when needed he's an oldschool Black Metal vocalist. On the other side we have Aimy - her voice in my opinion is a voice so clean and angelic, she could easily be a Pop-star with a voice like that, which I think is really unique that a voice like that takes part in a metal band as extreme as SHE MUST BURN. I love everything about it, I think it's fitting and gives the band another thing to be proud of amongst all the other things that they should be proud of.

"The Misery"
The guitars sound in the entire album is amazing, a sound which fits both oldschool Black Metal and modern metalcore is something hard to achieve, but Terry and James nailed it, and where the modern sound of the guitars fail to be black enough. Angelic Aimy's keyboard sounds fill what's missing. Sadly I can barely hear Kyle's Bass; I can't tell if he has his own parts or plays the same as the guitars or just the chord roots. I can barely hear him, and when I do, he just provides a bit of rumble; the lack of bass has two sides for me, if it was intended. I guess it's to fit the black atmosphere, resembling the lack of bass in BURZUM's recordings, then they succeeded in giving another aspect to their sound. If not intended, it's just a shame that the bass sound is so barely visible in the mix.

"Into Light"
I love Aimy's voice, and this song starts with such a compliment to her voice. It starts with only the keys, some atmosphere sounds and Aimy's angelic vocal. This song is less heavy then all the previous ones, it provides a break in the heavyness of "Under The Shadows" which I think is a must, in EPs and albums like these. "Quieter" songs gives you a relaxation for your ears and makes you ready for more.

"Wish To Exist"
I can't say anything bad about SHE MUST BURN, but "Wish To Exist" felt to me like it's almost the same as previous songs in the album, in a band as genrewise complicated as SHE MUST BURN. I expect to be drawn in by each and each of the songs in the album, "Wish To Exist" is a well built song, sounds amazing, but still it feels the same as the rest of the album. If to be honest I think it's not a problem in the writing of the song and lyrics, but maybe in the recording or the producing.

"Eclipse"
Everything I said about "Wish To Exist" applies to "Eclipse" aswell. "Eclipse" is the last song in the EP, and I think they've put a bit more weight on the Metalcore aspect in their music in that song, the breaks are more core-ish. I have a warm place for Core, so this song gave me a bit more of what i'm used to, but still felt new and I really loved it. Except the core vocals, I've always prefered clean singing over growls and screams, but if growls and screams are a must, I would preferably choose as less screams and more low growls and grunts, but that's just my taste. I think SHE MUST BURN pulled it off well. The last thirty seconds of "Eclipse" are my fav part of the song because of Aimy's clean vocals and a little bit faster singing than what I've heard in "Under The Shadows" and that line was really beautiful in my opinion.

"Under The Shadows" is the begining of a new era, the era of SHE MUST BURN. I would love to see more from them, and can't wait to pile their albums and CDs in my collection, and to see them live would be mesmerizing. I'd love seeing their name on big festivals as headliners, or tours with bands such as THE FACELESS and BEHEMOTH. I think "Under The Shadows" is just the first fruit of a young tree, and I can't wait to taste the next fruits. I rate SHE MUST BURN's "Under The Shadows" with a 9.
