SHE MUST BURN is a Blackened Deathcore band from London, UK. They formed in 2014 and promptly released an EP "Under the Shadows" in 2015 and another EP "She Must Burn" in 2016. They are back with their debut full-length release "Grimoire". This album comes in with nine tracks and a listening time of just over 32 minutes.
The opening track "Ritual" is a 44 second intro with a creaking door and loud hard breathing. The fire is lit and the breathing subsides. "The Wicked", track two, rolls in in classic Deathcore style. The track is dark and the vocals are a scream growl. They are sort of creepy. We then get a taste of the female vocals that are, of course, angelic and create a weird but interesting duo. There are also really deep vocals and a gritty more classic Rock vocal mixed in there as well. There is so much vocal 'war' here it took me multiple listens to get to the music. The drums are fantastic. They rhythm change on a dime and keeps ferocity throughout. The bass isn't as noticeable throughout the track, but it does see some shining moment love mixed in and out here. The guitars keep it low but fast. This track is really good. The creepy scream-y vocals turn me off. They always do. The fantastic part about this band is they have a bit, nope, a lot of vocal contrast making this a much easier listen for me than the usual creepy screamed vocal does.
"Hollowed Grounds", track four, comes howling in with blast beats galore and a swaying guitar. The blast beats continue and they sort of takeover, which isn't a bad thing, but they are Omni present and always felt. The guitars are good, and really show off at 2:11. The bass is thick, and done perfectly. The vocals here, are again ranged and various. Creating a nice flow. The last 15 or so seconds is key heaven. The keys tend to get a little lost in the tracks so far, so allowing for an outro that is stripped down creates contrast and complexity.
Track five "Victoria" is by far my favorite track of the album. The vocals are nice (i.e. less creepy scream) and similar to those of Metalcore and we get to see some clean male vocals here as well. The musicianship is perfect. The drums are a bit lighter, not so blast beat-y, but still has speed and depth to them. The bass is chunky and thick and the guitars are light, airy and rhythmically appealing. This is really a very different track than what we've been presented so far and by far my favorite of the album. There's a bit of break at 2:30 where the bass gets to shine high. Track six, "A False Heaven", is a great name for this two and half minute beauty. It is full keys and does give a sense of a false heaven, because you know there will be more onslaught to come. "From The Grave" brought it all back to the forefront.
"Roseblood", track eight, brings back the screams and the blast beats. This track alternated between vocals, which have started to grow on me as I made my way through the album. The keys are a welcome treat in this track. The track is great, but felt short; sort of unfinished. Like they could have extended it a bit, but ended it where it was.
The final track, "After Death", roars in with all the things. The keys are proudly displayed. The drums are quick and savage. The bass is phenomenal in this track and add so much complexity to it. The guitars are low and aggressive. Female vocals make another appearance in this track. They weren't needed to improve the track, but they do create an even more creative piece.
The various vocals create a unique aspect to SHE MUST BURN. That is never a bad thing. "Grimoire", at first, was confusing for me. However, the music is great and the vocals grow on you. At first, I thought this was going to be just another Blackened 'whatever genre' album. I was wrong. It turns out, there is a lot of musicianship, talent, and creativity here. I'd give this one a whirl.
