September Code - III album cover

The balance between Progressive Rock and Heavy Metal is an ample region, if you think about it in terms of distance. Since RUSH began the fusion between both musical styles, we have those bands with a more Heavy Metal orientated sound, or those with a more tender and melodic way into Progressive Rock. So the Greek quintet SEPTEMBER CODE, from Athens, comes to show what they are about with "III". To start,I'd like to say that their musical work is really good. It's heavy in the due way, but they are a band that is 40% Meal, and 60% Progressive Rock, so you will find excellent melodies, great vocal work with normal tunes, and a refined musical technique. It's heavy and elegant, but strangely, the band prefers to use a guitar orientated sound than something where keyboards are the most important part of the musical concept. Their music is really good, and has a good amount of musical accessibility (as you can hear clearly on some parts of "Skeptic.")

The sound quality is really excellent. It has that essential dose of heavy weight, but the quantities of musical aggressiveness are extremely small. Maybe this is the reason the band sounds more into a Progressive Rock insight than a Heavy Metal one. But it doesn't mean that their work can't be enjoyed by Metalheads. Their musical work is really very good, and you can see as their best moments the following songs: "Self Crisis," with its technical and melodic insight, a touch of World Music, and a balanced focus between guitars and keyboards; the accessible and charming "Skeptic," full of introspective and beautiful acoustic parts where acoustic guitars, pianos and tender vocals are excellent; the Progressive Rock energy show on "Cause Key," where some elements of bands like RUSH and YES can be found in the middle atmosphere, and the same can be said about "Action/Reaction," where the tempos changes in a very fast way, and where bass and drums are excellent; the excellent guitars and melodies that permeates "Fear No More"; the contrast between tender and complex melodies and heavy moments on "Blank" (where the vocals are giving a particular show as well); and the tender musical embrace called "Physital." SEPTEMBER CODE is a very good band, and deserves all fortune in the world. So, give this a chance and listen to "III" carefully, and you won't regret it!
