Profanatica - Disgusting Blasphemies Against God album cover

Picture this: when you first hear a band's name that somehow you find it interesting (i.e. "Greek" name, silly name etc.), what do you do? You Google it in order to find more about that certain band. And next comes the best part: pictures. That one must be the next best thing after souvlaki. How many times have you laughed till your guts turned upside down? Well, same thing happens here with the (pervert) Black Metal band PROFANATICA from the States. Imagine my reaction when I first saw (about 3-4 years ago) their famous picture where they stand in full corpse paint make-up with their cocks out. Seriously now, MOTORHEAD's "Rock Out" gets to a whole new level here. And some of these guys used to play for INCANTATION. However, I'll try to get serious and not laugh every time I picture the above image. After all, it's all about the music.

It doesn't happen that often nowadays but most of the times when you see the record label that a band is signed to, you kind of fully trust it because it has never failed before somehow. That thing happens with me for HELLS HEADBANGERS RECORDS and a couple more underground labels. Even if I do not have a clue about the band, I will buy the record because of the label. And up to now I have never failed in my choice. Up to now? Yes, unfortunately. Maybe it's an exception but then again...

Honestly, I do not know where to start from. Let's take it one by one. First of all, the album title. "Disgusting Blasphemies Against God". You can say it is a classic PROFANATICA title, as we are used to those, and it is totally a "Black Metal" one. No irony in that, if you believe so, it is not my fault. So far, so good. But then, the next best thing cums...I mean comes forward, some of the song titles. Because sometimes words are powerless and you have to see in order to believe, here we go: "Black Cum", Angel With Cock", "Pious Piece Of Shit", "Covered In Black Shit" etc. I know it's PROFANATICA (actually, this band is one of my favorites) , I know things are supposed to be "cult" and so on but this is kinda over the limit between 'OK' and 'ridiculous'.

Musically what we have here is nothing more than a classic PROFANATICA record. You know, the one that when you buy it you are sure about what you will listen and how the whole "story" will go. Nothing fancy and spectacular here, only bone-crushing Black Metal from the States the way this band (and others similar to them) knows. If you are familiar with their music you know more or less what to expect. It is not a bad album but it is not something that will make our jaws drop to the floor. But you did not expect something else from PROFANATICA, did you? Otherwise it would not be PROFANATICA. The band stays original from the beginning to the music, in terms of lyrical themes and subjects as well, they play and that is why they have loyal fans and - on the other hand - 'enemies'. Count me on the first ones. A plus to the whole record is the cover. Again a GREAT cover art which fully describes, to my humble opinion, the whole album and what the band wants to say to the audience.

To sum up and make long things short: "Disgusting Blasphemies Against God" is NOT a bad record. On the contrary it is very good. However it is one of those that you will probably hear a couple of times and then it will take you some time to say "Yeah, I also got this one from the Americans on my collection!" and put it back on your CD player or turntable. Despite I am aware of this fact mentioned above, I am pretty sure I will give the vinyl version a couple of spins of my turntable. And try to look for videos from their live gigs.
