Primogenorum - Ye Last Ordeal album cover

PRIMOGENORUM were founded in 2008 in the Ukraine. Following a few Demo releases, and a couple full length albums, the band is now releasing their latest EP, titled "Ye Last Ordeal," which contains four tracks. Lyrically, the band deals with darkness and inhumanity, and like many Black Metal bands from the Ukraine, they do not have a Facebook page. Let's delve into the music to see what they are all about.

"Trail of Black Fire" leads off the album. The production is muted as you would expect with Old School Black Metal. An eerie guitar riff is accompanied by vile, harrowing vocals. The overall sound is cold, slow and dissonant, reminiscent of the frozen, desolate landscapes of the Ukraine. "Ominous Nights" opens with dissonant guitar notes and an occasional scream. It develops a cadence eventually, which is slow and grinding, like a lumbering mastodon walking across a frozen lake into the night mist. "On the Ground of the Dying Man" is faster out of the gates. The drums roll like thunder and the riff is ever-present. Suddenly it sound like a bomb going off, and then the riff changes.

"Sacrilegious Atrocity" is much shorter, clocking in at three-and-a-half minutes. A fuzz runs through the track and screams come from what sounds like female victims being tortured. Or, it could be the squeaking of machinery...it's hard to tell for sure. But it ends on a note of horror. Overall, this was an interesting EP. I have the feeling that the band could care less about what the outside world thinks about them, and that their true Black Metal roots are what holds everything together. It was just mediocre for me, and I enjoy much of what the Black Metal genre has to offer. There just wasn't enough variation on the album for me.
