PEQUOD was born in 1998 in Germany. PEQUOD is the namesake of the ship in Herman Melvilles' "Moby Dick". The band was created from those who have different backgrounds, but are all rooted in heavy and extreme metal, creating their highly explosive sound. PEQUOD has four previous releases, two six-track demos, a five track EP, and a full-length album "Forgotten" in 2011. Now they are back with their latest release "False Divinity", which comes in with four tracks and a listening time of just of 21 minutes. The opening and title track starts off strong and the immediate smack of Black Metal hits you. There is also an intense Thrash Metal elements woven deep within the music. The guitars are gnarly and have a bite that keeps the track interesting. The vocals are a deep bark that is comparable to Nergal of BEHEMOTH. The blast beat drums keep the tracks tempo fast and hard, while the bass is so low, but with about two minutes left the bass and it's glorious growling gets some love.

Track two, "Flaying Demon", is a hard hitting and has some incredible guitar work. It almost sounds a little on the Progressive side for a Black Metal focused group. There was phenomenal melody that was the hook and sinker of the album for me. The more elements you can add to a track without it feeling over worked, leads to a remarkable track. "Flaying Demon" is that track.  "Malicious Joy", track three, brings the album back to its roots, with a Thrashy dark sound that evolves into a little more progressive then back again. The track shifts ever so slightly from each throughout its entirety. Again, the guitar work is creative and imaginative here, giving the track an infallible base, so the bass and drums, while are also immaculate, can't go wrong. Track five, "Pride of Creation" is the final track for this release. It gives the listener another idea of the creative music PEQUOD can produce. It's another track that has its roots firmly in the ground but experiments outside the genre bias of Black Thrash Metal.

"False Divinity" is an excellent release with many creative executions that shatter genre constrictions, while still holding true to their sound. PEQUOD has out done themselves with this one. I can't wait to hear what they come up with next and I cant what to find out when they get a record deal, because it's absolutely ludicrous that they don't have one.
