What happens when you are searching in a pile of promo CDs and you come across one of the bands you grew up with? You are just becoming frenzy, you grab the album and you let nobody get near or you can just bite his head off! That is exactly what happened when Immortalis, OVERKILL's brand new Thrash Metal piece of work fell in my hands! Time for some pure and relentless Thrash Metal you berserk thrashers!
After reviewing THE CURSED's debut album Room Full Of Sinners - a band that Bobby Blitz Ellsworth participates - I was sure that Bobby's wicked voice may be a bit tired from the years this guy carries on his back, but it is still one of the best voices in Thrash Metal! The fact that OVERKILL are collaborating again with the Zazula family made me expect something more than a just good album. At first, I was afraid I was going to face one more album that would have the level albums like The Killing Kind or Equilibrium... (I don't even remember its name) had. Both albums were mediocre for OVERKILL.
The US thrashers choose their classic way to start the album, which means they use a small intro with some riffs until the main riff kicks in. Devils In The Mist is definitely a strong and catchy song to start an album like Immortalis. The album keeps its solid heaviness until the last second combining OVERKILL's mixture of groovy heavy parts and catchy Thrash riffs that bring back the glorious days Thrash Metal once lived! What can I say about songs like What It Takes or Walk Through Fire, songs that can easily enter the Thrash Hymns list! One more song that impressed me was the third track in this album, Skull And Bones, which features a guest appearance by LAMB OF GOD's incredible singer D. Randall Blythe. Just by listening to it, you can understand that when the old school thing meets the modern Metal reality only miracles can happen!
The production is one more positive thing in Immortalis. The sound is heavier than ever, the guitars are sharp like a razor and the rhythm section is a solid wall of titanium that will blow your brains to the wall! The only thing that seemed a bit strange was the label that signed them. To tell you the truth I didn't even know Bodog Music and I wasn't sure that this label could offer them the support they need. The fact is that Bodog is the label that released OVERKILL's new masterpiece and we owe these guys a thank you! Keep on thrashing mad you crazy fuckers!
