British Psych Stoner Rockers OLD MAN LIZARD are back with their 3rd full length album this November. I accidently bumped into them on Bandcamp and found their music pretty interesting, so here I am reviewing their new album "True Misery", releasing through Wasted State Records.
The 1st song, "Shark Attack" starts off in a very stylish fashion. Its heavy fuzz rock with lot of ambient melodic parts infused in between. The vocals are faint and clean and work great for the band's sound. It's mellowed down version of Stoner Metal, if you ask me. The repetitive nature of the song doesn't test your patience. "Snakes!!!" is a much pacier 1:51 min song with some really cool riffs, has that UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS vibe to it. The weirdly titled "Tree Of Te´ne´re´" has a country music sound to it, infused with blues sound all over it. The faint screaming vocals brings a unique sound to the song here. The story driven song in
"The Adventures Of Rupert Biggins" is more like a chugging Hard Rock / Stoner Rock song, but more emphasis on the lyrics than the music itself, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing here. "Trees Fall Down" is a mid-tempo Stoner Rock song with some cool riffs, but has that down beat, depressing vibe to it, which actually works great for the song here. The 8 min song in "Cursed Ocean, Relentless Sea" is exactly what you would expect from a song like this, slow, depressing, and long. Surprisingly, it isn't heavy enough, which I think can be said about the entire album itself. The song sucks you in, with the deep story driven lyrics, and takes you to a different world, which I think is that hallmark of OLD MAN LIZARD. Around 6 min into the song, there are some really cool Stoner / Doom riffs that any fan should be really happy to find. "Misery Is Miserable" is another slow 8 min song, and honestly it actually doesn't disappoint, especially because it doesn't sound repetitive in itself or with other songs here. It's a journey into another alter universe that only OLD MAN LIZARD knows the route to, and it's not all monotony and depression, as the boys bring lots of variations and flavour into the song with change in tempo and song structures.
The album ends with another riff driven, slow Doom / Stoner song in "Return To Earth", with some more cool sharp riffs. "True Misery" is one of those albums that you can put up any day of the week and still not feel out of place. OLD MAN LIZARD has hit all the right notes and the nihilistic depressing vibe of the album works just great for the album. Dear stoners, pick this one.
