Some men just like to watch the world burn, creating disruption for disruption's sake. A lot of it comes through as little more than a whisper amongst the screaming masses, but sometimes, it can make you think. Enter GRIEVING MIRTH, a project between fellow Black Metal musicians Adversor and Abomination. Their origin is almost as interesting as the swirling fury of their music on their debut LP, "Calamitosvs Omine", released in March earlier this year.

The band's founders come from either side of the Nuevo Laredo, Mexico/Laredo, USA border, and formed with the intention of writing Black Metal that went against normal conventions. With the addition of vocalist DH, the band has incorporated Italian-language lyrics into their sound. It's a strange, though not completely disparate mix (especially for bands in 2015), but the results on the album are strong enough to distract from putting too much thought into how trve a Black Metal band, located near the equator, can be compared to their brothers in the Northern darkness.

A short acoustic piece introduces the listener to "Malaugurio", and the opener wastes little time launching into a frenzy of sharp, agonizing riffs and unrelenting blastbeats. Equally laudable for its ferocity, as well as its atmospheric presence, the song proves that there are no gimmicks with this band of misfits. The next track, "Indelectatvs", uses synths to great effect, as it creates a less harsh, though still damn heavy, counterpart to the emotional shell shock of the previous song. They don't dominate the proceedings, but instead instill an ethereal flow, as well as highlighting the powerful feelings of the music.

GRIEVING MIRTH really hit their stride with "Optio", which, to me, sums up their musical approach in a succinct manner. Massive and melancholic, one can almost feel the cinematic hugeness of the dark, mournful vibes pulling at the soul. A short break introduces clean vocals, which are soon drowned out by sinister voices that seem to appear out of nowhere, like some kind of horrible voice inside the head. "Abuso", the final song on the album, isn't quite as menacing, but it more than makes up for it with its depressing subject matter and equally sorrowful melodies.

GRIEVING MIRTH show plenty of potential with this solid debut, an extension of the Black Metal tree that holds true to its heavy roots while exploring different textures, ideas, and sounds with which to immerse the audience in. If you're familiar with groups like DEAFHEAVEN and SOUL DISSOLUTION, they're not far off of the same musical path, so fans of creative-minded, but still undeniably heavy Black Metal should give this one a listen.<
