Gojira - The Link album cover

Talking about an album difficult to be classified! Gojira (the Japanese name for Godzilla - respect!) really gave me a hard time to make up my mind as to what I should write in this review. I guess this can't be that bad when at the same time I also get copycat albums of known acts. If you like the music of Gojira... that's something totally subjective, but none can accuse this band for lack of originality.
Gojira was formed in 1999 and with their debut album, Terra Incognita (2001), they became quite known in their home country, France. The Link was officially released in 2003 again by their former label Boycott Records and as with their first album, it lacked of worldwide distribution. Through their existence Gojira have managed to support some very known acts in their country.
Now with Listenable Records on their side the band attempts a worldwide assault in order to test their strength against a larger market. Musically speaking... well, The Link sounds like a mixture of slow Death Metal (like the murky moments of Morbid Angel), Hardcore (mostly because of the vocals) and grind (not sure on this last one, it just gives you this feeling). All this creates a twisted palette of sounds that, to be honest with you, at times was quite disturbing for my ears. Don't know who's responsible for the production but I want him to record the drums on my album (when I ever have one) too! Definitely not for the feint hearted, rather technical when the occasion demands it, The Link kept me stuck to my speakers, anxious to hear what would happen next!
Some of you might not like this and I can't blame you. But at least listen to The Link or to Over The Flow just to get a glimpse of how it is to be a band with a vision and not just another clone!
