DEF LEPPARD was part of the NWOBHM in the late 70's and early 80's. Some newer Metal fans were just too young to remember how vital they really were to the development of this genre that we all love today. Sure, they embodied the glossier side of the genre and were welcomed by Pop and Rock fans and radios across the country, but this takes nothing away from their universal impact on Rock and Metal music overall, and they have written some of the most memorable songs in the genre of all-time. They have also persevered though more tragedy than any one band should ever have had to endure. This is a two-disc DVD from their Detroit, Michigan show, and contains seventeen tracks.

A buff and shirtless PHIL COLLEN leads the band to the front of the stage for the opening track "Let's Go," as the Union Jack is visible all over their set. The lighting show is spectacular and the vocal harmonies shine brightly in tune. They have always been a band for their fans and that is absolutely the case here as well. "Animal" sure gets the crowd fired up as one of their all-time most adored songs. Though reports of Elliot's voice being inconsistent as of late, his raspy and soul-filled snarls are right on point here. Without pause, they head to the "High 'N Dry" album next with fan favorite "Let It Go." Executed as if it were still 1981, this is an iconic song that does not sound like it comes from 30+ years later. Looking cocksure as they release the hard fury of "Foolin', they take advantage of what the entire stage has to offer, energizing the crowd with their enthusiasm. Camera flashes and lighters abound when "Love Bites" is performed, perhaps their most beloved ballad, and their first #1 hit single.

Disc Two kicks off with "Rocket," which has a fantastic lighting show, and the jovial nature of the song gives the band the ability to play around with the song a bit and interact more with the audience. Elliot dons a top hat and white leather jacket as ring-leader. The "Hysteria" medley is touching and comes with some nice photos of the bands as well. The final four tracks are classic fan favorites. Fans echo the chorus in the big "Adrenalize" hit "Let's Get Rocked," and go absolutely ape for the song that broke the "Hysteria" album and the band out of the red with "Pour Some Sugar On Me." It's always been a simple song but how can you ever forget that chorus? I like the choice of "Photograph" as the closer. For me, this is DEF LEPPARD, and it's absolutely one of my favorite songs from any band, and from any time.

Seeing the set as a whole really reminded me of how great they are live, and that I need to get out and see them again and soon. Few bands have managed to stay relevant this far into their career, and produce a live show so full of fun and sincerity.
