Chaos Plague - Existence Through Annihilation album cover

Formed in 2006, Italian Progressive Death Metallers CHAOS PLAGUE recently released "Existence Through Annihilation". This ten track album comprises a multitude of interesting technical abilities and Death Metal style vocal talents. Making strong use of each band member, this album is evidence of the potential that comes from a tight unit of musicians.

Although I cannot argue against their claim to be Progressive, their strong Tech Metal sounds are what pushes them to be audibly unique and unexpected. I think this combination of Prog and Death Metal works incredibly well. If there's one thing I have learnt about CHAOS PLAGUE, it's that you cannot be sure what to expect throughout each track. This album opens with an atmospheric intro track, "A Fair Vendetta", which easily heightens the anticipation for the rest of the album. From then on, we are plunged into a world of strong, galloping bass lines and crazy riffs that change before you get use to them. Normally, I find it a challenge to appreciate such discord within metal, but I can't deny that CHAOS PLAGUE achieve a great sound through doing this. Tracks like "Collision of Entities" manage to bring about the Death Metal style guitar, drum and vocal work more than other tracks on this album. However, as the song progresses, elements of technical breaks and uneasy bass lines are what pulls them back into the realm of Tech Metal. Seventh track "Inner Visions of External Illusions" takes a slower approach to Progressive and Technical Metal, introducing the rest of the track with gentle yet powerful guitars. This works really well to build up the remainder of the track in all its technical glory! "Sinner's Regret" shows off the vocal talents of Daniele Belotti as his ability to perform clean vocals as well as harsh vocals has been made clear.

If I was to tie this album down to one single word, it would be Aggression. They don't seem to hold back on this, which allows their music to have that sheer force and bulk that is needed to produce quality metal of this genre.
