I have to admit that it has been a really long time since I heard something that even resembles the likes of this new band from the US, BLOODIEST. Newly signed to the giants of Extreme Metal, the Relapse Records label, the band's new album "Descent" bears the type of Metal that is truly hard to find.

In a way BLOODIEST took me back to the 70s type of psychedelic and progressive Rock that partly reigned the worldwide Rock scene. That is why there were some fair dosages of PINK FLOYED and even a quantity of KING CRIMSON on those kinds of weird Metal compositions on the album. Moreover, in the likes of the bands I mentioned, there is also a fine atmosphere that is hard to explain because it is rather diverse.

Here and there, BLOODIEST inserted some lead guitar riffs but those were somewhat rare. I would say that most of the album is composed of slow tempo acoustic and electric main riffs, mysterious multi-vocalic lyrical verses and passages / bridges filled with sound effects. Without a doubt that this album was written with a lot of thought to create something out of the ordinary and BLOODIEST did succeed on that task. However, this band couldn't overcome the boredom that in a way infested in their tracks, especially in their long length ones.

With the lack of lead guitar verses, and even the charm of the acoustic guitar as it was displayed on "Coh" for example, the longer periods of rhythm in the tunes should have been made a bit more interesting while making an effort to channel the feeling that something is moving than standing still. Probably the only tracks that really made BLOODIEST memorable were "Pastures" and "Fallen". The track "Dead Inside" was also a fine contender for the formers, yet, its length actually hurt it rather than helping it as it was pretty inspiring on its first half.

BLOODIEST has just began their way with this debut album and also their signing to Relapse Records showed that there is something in them that other bands didn't show. That factor is in their favour. I would expect that their next release would be slightly more energetic under the same music line and the same psychedelic aura.
