Arkham Witch - I Am Providence album cover

British Heavy Metal lovelies ARKHAM WITCH are back with their newest release "I Am Providence". From quickly reading through their lyrics it's evident that they are massive Lovecraft fanboys (and girl). Their lyrics draw heavily on the legendary author's writings and themes. Have you ever wondered what Lovecraft's back catalogue would sound like with a band playing? Well listen to this album.

The first thing I noticed about this album was that not one track went over the three and a half minute mark and quite early on it's evident why. While none of the tracks are bad, they are inconsistent. Throughout the album we get the sense that we are listening to a band that haven't quite found their sound. There's a fine line between being a chameleon and just sounding lost, ARKHAM WITCH hover on that line. Some songs have serious Punk elements and some Hard Rock and some Heavy Metal. While it is admirable to not stick to one genre, when each track starts to sound like a different band is where you need to draw the line.

One thing I really enjoyed about this album was the amount of fun that emanates from each track. They seem like they're having fun and that really contributes to the enjoyment of the album and takes away from the sheer schizophrenia that also emanates from the album. It is also interesting to hear such an upbeat take on Lovecraft's dark and disturbing work; something that hasn't been done before to my knowledge!

While this album is enjoyable, I found myself only somewhat liking this album because I like Lovecraft's work. ARKHAM WITCH rely a lot on his work and that transfers onto their inconsistent sound. It's kind of like watching a remake of your favourite film simply because it's your favourite film, it'll never do the original justice but you somewhat enjoy it. ARKHAM WITCH need to work together a little bit more to find their true sound, not chop and change between various genres, which is not only confusing and infuriating but messy and offbeat.
