In a recent interview with New Horizons Zine blog, guitarist Wael Daou spoke of his career, influences and about the time he lived in Lebanon, where he spoke of the difficulty of playing Rock/Metal there, and all their repression.

Excerpts of the interview by João Messias:

NHZ: You got to play in bands and Madame Saatan Alma Cog. How was playing in these groups and what gave you in terms of learning.

Wael: I lived in Lebanon from 11 to 17 years old. As soon as I returned to Brazil was dying to get into a band when I was warned Madame Saatan, hitherto a new style for me. The group had a hint of regionality in music and Brazilian rhythms which opened my eyes to pop.

Have Alma Cog was conceived shortly after my departure with a view to merge metal with jazz. Each band member had a different experiences and very different musical tastes, this created a very peculiar musical result.

NHZ: Speaking in this country , tell us how is the scene of rock/metal in the country and if there is any group highlighted.

Wael: At the time I lived in Lebanon the rock/metal were forbidden. There was a strong scene however, the few bands that were in the country were united. We did shows hidden and we fled police (laughs), after the ban ended, had an incredible boom in the country, and the influences that exist in the blood of the Arab people are amazing. Millennia of history and culture in music runs through the region. I stand in the middle of some metal musicians like Elijah Njeim, Sevag Hadjiam, Bilal Wehbe and Omara Khaddaj.
