Nothing Left To Steal

London-based headbangers DEATH VALLEY KNIGHTS have been around since 2011, bringing Metal to the masses both in-studio and on stage. The group, featuring Jake Thorsen (Guitar/Vocals), Nikhil Talwar (Guitar/Vocals), Elliott Hall (Bass/Vocals), and Steve 'Sticks' Brill (Drums), came on to the scene in 2011 with a pair of well-received singles, followed-up by 2013's "Nothing Left To Steal" EP.
"Tongue Of Fire" opens with a quick double-bass drum fill before launching into a chugging, mid-tempo jam. It's one of the strongest songs on the EP, with its heavy-yet-catchy, meaty main riff perfectly complimenting the soaring, melodic chorus, with the latter being one of the single best moments here. The solo section is another high point, with the band's pummeling rhythm playing flattening the listener almost as much as the leads do. Not bad for the shortest song of the bunch.
"DVK" is a pretty straightforward tune. It doesn't really jump out at you as much as the other tracks, but is still solid. "Before The End" is similar in this way, but has less of a generic-Rock feel to it, and a bit mellower. It is another quality offering, boosted by its strong chorus and memorable lead riff. Title track "Nothing Left To Steal" quickly picks up the slack, with its distinct lead melody, driving guitars and a chorus that Metal fans of every ilk can relate to. The solo mixes technicality and feeling to great effect, something that Thorsen and Talwar do well throughout the EP.
"Promises" pounds away at much the same pace as the rest of the songs, but does so with a more sinister edge to it following the clean guitar intro. The band is firing on all cylinders here. Like "Tongue Of Fire", this song maintains a strong melodic sensibility, and is just bursting with attitude, especially during the extended, dual-lead guitar solo, where Thorson and Talwar properly demonstrate the art of playing face-melting leads.
DEATH VALLEY KNIGHTS have a lot to offer here despite the short track listing. The guitar work is excellent, bolstered by Brill's skilled, aggressive drumming. The vocals are ok, but it's the songwriting that is the real X-factor here. It's evident that the band has a good feel for their instruments, and each track is well-written, flowing seamlessly from section to section, with no instruments unduly grabbing attention away from the others. "Nothing Left To Steal" is an entertaining listen from beginning to end, and should be on the radars of all fans of classic-minded Heavy Metal.
