Egregore – It Echoes in the Wind
April 9, 2026
Canadian miscreants indeed. I love the boldness of the band to just break through the traditions of the genre and create their own monster. Yeah, the nostalgia of their forefathers is still there in spades, but this is very much their own creation. It’s furious, filthy, and dark, as any good Death or Black Metal album should be.

Deadnate – Mosaic
April 7, 2026
This was one of the most potent, ferocious, oppressive, and suffocating albums in the genre so far this year. Their technical abilities are obvious, and so is their control over the flow of the sound. The artwork speaks of fracture, assembly, and perspective. A mosaic only makes sense when you step back far enough to see how all the broken, jagged pieces fit together. That’s exactly how DEADNATE’s music works on this record.

Atlantic Ridge – Atlantic Ridge
April 6, 2026
This wasn’t a bad album per se, it just felt disjointed to me, and some of the songs ran together in terms of their sound. The drum programming you can just hear clearly, and it turned me off a bit. Credit the band for not following a tried and true blueprint for the genre, it was just a little off the mark for me.

Vreid – The Skies Turn Black
March 27, 2026
Transformative? You bet. For a band that has been around as long as they have, I expected a safe and predicable album. Imagine my surprise when I put “The Skies Turn Black” on. It’s very much a Black Metal album at its core, but the songs are so diverse. This is exactly the kind of album that pays homage to the past, but lives very much in the future.

Ram-Zet – Sapien
March 20, 2026
I know that a band wants to start with the one song that is a cut above the rest, that could easily be seen as the best song they have. Well, that is definitely the case with “Zerocane”. This is simply the best track that RAM-ZET has ever produced.

Nine Orders – Ex Imperium
March 16, 2026
Perhaps my biggest concern about the album isn’t the songwriting, or the musicianship, it’s rather the succession of one melancholy song after another. It keeps the album from really being able to take flight. Progressive music is typically always full of surprises, but this just coasted under the radar for me.
review
Karmamoi – Eternal Mistake
March 15, 2026
This was an excellent album. It’s progressive in the sense of some odd chord progressions and a strong sense of timing from the band, but those qualities don’t take over the album. Instead, the band chooses to focus on a strong vocal performance, including building great harmonies.

Chasing Sanity – Duskfall Volume 1
March 11, 2026
This was a very pleasing album that took me back to the 80’s, at a time when keyboards ruled the airwaves. The Retrowave sound was enhanced by six strings, and a dark pulse of electronica that was meaty. It rode smoothly into the far crevices of your mind, and took root, rebuilding some of the times and the music that was dormant in my head.

Graveborn – Metempsychosis
February 27, 2026
Take a close look at the album cover for clues of what you might find musically. Deep shades of purple and blue swirls chase each other’s tails high in the canopy while a single person watches. It’s like magic in many ways. Their musicianship…is stellar, and they are able to breathe new life into the genre by taking bold steps on both sides of the aisle. It will leave you drained by the end, utterly spent.

Melancholie – Winterkronieken
February 25, 2026
After a second listen, I came to appreciate the album more. The lengthy songs can be intimidating to a listener whose attention span might not be long enough, but I kept finding subtle nuances on the album. These nuances suggest a grand storyteller, and musician. I have to say I enjoyed the outright melodies more than the aggressive blueprint of Black Metal, but there is a great balance on the album between the two.

MØL – DREAMCRUSH
January 30, 2026
This is an album where Blackgaze breathes and burns. The genre has always lived in contradiction, but what truly sets the band apart is their heightened sense of melody. They steer the songs, and carve pathways through the distortion. They ache…they yearn, and they linger long after the track has collapsed. They prove that heaviness doesn’t have to sacrifice melody, and that melody doesn’t weaken intensity. Instead, the two feed each other, creating something vast, immersive, and deeply human.

Laughing Stock – Life in Seven Dreams
January 10, 2026
I mentioned that the album seems to be more about exploring the journey than arriving at any destination. Certain Progressive Rock music features subtle complexities that may challenge even seasoned listeners. I found the material here to be reflective of that. It might be one of the best features of the genre however…that sense of mystery and having to peel back the layers to find what’s underneath.

Course of Fate – Behind The Eclipse
January 1, 2026
With all the strong, positive sounds and compositions on the album, and there are many, it does come with one area I believe they could improve on. That is the pacing of the songs. Too many are on the mid-tempo or even slower side, and that does bog down the album a bit. Still, that aside, it was an excellent album that combines their strong musicianship with their rock-solid songwriting skills.

The Last Sound Revelation – The Proximity Effect
December 31, 2025
When you create instrumental music, you have to work harder because vocals and lyrics aren’t there to guide you as a listener. The album title refers to is a phenomenon where directional microphones significantly boost low-frequency (bass) sounds as they get closer to the sound source, making voices sound bigger or fuller, and that’s what you will find on the album.
