The best part of the album was the bass work. It wasn’t a bad album by any stretch, it was just too plain…too one sided for me. Doom Metal can be very vibrant, and quite exciting, if done the right way. This album just didn’t get off the ground for me, save for that final song, which was excellent.

Øltreluce – lövërliminal

The melodies on the album are glorious in their defiance. Like streaks of golden light cutting through storm clouds, they emerge through tremolo lines, layered harmonies, and swelling, mournful leads. In many moments, it feels less like the darkness is being accompanied by beauty, and more like it’s being challenged by it. Devastating in its weight, but luminous in its execution, it pulls you into shadow, only to show you how much light still lives there. It’s a breathtaking storm where melody triumphs not by avoiding the darkness, but by illuminating it.

Hilltops Are For Dreamers – A Soulless Drive

Even being able to put together a three-song EP tells a lot about the band’s perseverance in the record industry, which to quote Gene Simmons,” is chaos. It wasn’t bad per se, it just failed to excite me as a listener. The vocal harmonies were probably the best part of the album, and the band has a strong sense of musicianship. The album just fell a bit flat.

Musically THE MEDEA PROJECT do just what I was expecting, which is mixing the Doom Metal elements with Sludge Metal parts and then dribbling their Gothic Metal gravy over all of it. And that does give me some very interesting songs and soundscapes that take just under 40 minutes on “Kharon”.

Much of the music was razor sharp, cold, even sterile, but there were moments when the album breathed. This was a technical feat that you rarely come across anymore.

This was a curious album, that felt a bit unfinished for me, and perhaps that is the point. The past and the future make up someone’s life, and that is a difficult, lengthy story to tell. In the end, maybe our lives don’t really amount to much, or at least, not as much as the story itself. I would love to hear more from the band.

Creatvre – Toujours Humain

“Tourjous Humain” is a searing slab of metal, grinding forward like a rusted machine coming alive in a storm, its engine built on distortion, repetition, and complex tasks. What makes this record more than just a wall of sonic abrasion is the strange humanity that breathes through its fractured surfaces. What’s most striking is how personal this mechanical monstrosity feels. For all its concrete and steel, this is an album about survival, and finding rhythm inside the noise, and letting yourself breathe even when the air is poisoned.

A heavy blues and black metal based album, the thick bass notes are one of the best parts of the album. The band settles on a heavy riff, and just drives it home, like a rocket returning to earth. It isn’t anything overly original, but it comes from the heart, and few bands can rock this much energy in their music.

Sheffield hard hitters, OUR NORTH, have been serving up their enticing brand of Metalcore, fused with Hip Hop and Trap, since their formation in 2019. Channelling everyone from BRING ME THE HORIZON and WHILE SHE SLEEPS to BAD OMENS, OUR NORTH unleash a sound that is soaked in power, venom, diversity, and passion. I just hear LINKIN PARK with the heavier parts using a grunt or scream that is a bit more extreme.

But let’s get back to “Trapped”. It is Extreme Metal indeed, because if I would have to try and classify it in any other way I wouldn’t have been able to, even if my life depended on it. Yes, you will get Groove Metal, Death Metal, Punk, Hardcore, Grindcore and Sludge in there somewhere, but none of those fit the bill, so by branding it Extreme Metal the band is talking it easy on us listeners and reporters.

Overall, the album seemed to encompass several styles of music, keeping it alive and constantly moving, including Punk, Sludge, Industrial, and Hardcore. I also found the album nearly exactly as advertised…harsh and infectious at the same time. I understand why the songs are on the shorter side, because they are packed full of density. This was a swift kick in the teeth.
