If you aren’t aware, the genre boundaries for Black Metal are very wide these days. Each song on “Melena” feels like a journey into the unknown, unpredictable and unnerving, yet always purposeful. Dissonant chords stab through moments of haunting calm, blast beats erupt like storms, and subtle progressive flourishes twist the path further, ensuring the listener never feels safe. It’s rare to hear a Black Metal album this frightening that also demonstrates such compositional control. The band proves they are not just conjurers of atmosphere, but master songwriters who can bend structure and complexity to their will without sacrificing raw intensity.

Overall, this was a dreadfully delicious album within the Doom/Death Metal genre that old fans will love, and delightful to new fans such as myself, and consider that it was all created by one person…just outstanding. The feeling of doom and death you get on the album sinks deep, and once it has taken hold, there is no going back to the life you had before. Poetic justice, maybe?

As a writer, one of the more fulfilling parts of my job is watching a band’s evolution over time. This being their second album, they were firing on all cylinders until that final four-movement song, but let's get back to that. What I heard on this album was more of an open embracement of melodies and hooks. The core of their sound is still there…Gothic style keyboards mesh with vibrant melodies and while there are somber tones, they take a back seat to those great hooks. The final song is a bit of a mystery for me, and it leaves the album hanging, and the listener wanting more. This is a unique band that has an uncommon sound that is just so pleasing to me.

This album plays like the grand experiment of a mad scientist who has wired every song with unpredictable current. One moment it’s hammering you with chaotic riffs, the next it’s spiraling into strange atmospheric passages, and then it mutates again into some twisted electronic pulse. Two constants keep the chaos tethered. The first is an oppressive darkness that saturates everything, no matter how far the music strays stylistically. The second is the electronic element, which doesn’t just decorate the songs but electrifies them—like jolts to the nervous system. It’s a true testament to the idea that sometimes the most brilliant results come not from order, but from the carefully orchestrated chaos of a mind unafraid to embrace madness.

Overall, this wasn’t a bad album, and the band is talented, but unfortunately, talent will only take you so far in the genre. For me, this was much closer to Death Metal than anything else, and the Progressive elements were barely there. Too many of the songs sounded the same, and the band needs to take more chances in my opinion.

Overall, this was indeed a contentious and brutal slab of metal that will roll right over you and crush your skull into dust. Just when you think the band has reached their limit of intensity, they take it up a notch to impossible heights. If you dare, travel to their world of “Melancholia.”

Overall, this was an intense album in many ways. The level of aggression was high, and the band stepped on the gas pedal and hardly let up. Despondent elements provided a hopeless side of life as well.

This was an outstanding album, and the band left no stone unturned, even the smaller ones. The aggressive bite of Black Metal was there, just as you would want, but intelligent, technical elements also mixed in, as well as thoughtful, Progressive ones. I would call this “thinking man’s Black Metal.”

Overall, this was an excellent album, and it blended a few different subgenres of Metal together into a final product that I have to say was uncommon to listen to. That is what made the listen to intriguing for me. Thrashy at times, doomy at others, and even touches of Melodeath, these guys are on their A game on “Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration.”

In every way, this was an good album, and seeing that it is the band’s twelfth release, they did play it a bit safe. I get it…fans get used to a certain sound and that is what they want, what they expect. I’m not asking the band to shed their skin completely, but a taking a few more small chances might help the album to stand out a bit more.
