That does sound strange, but there is always a BLUTGOTT album that is pure Heavy metal in all it’s facets, but you also get a BLOOD GOD and a DEBAUCHERY album.

Let me start off with a bit of history first. In 2015 in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands a group of musicians got together and started a new band, which they baptised as RISE OF THE WOOD. And yes, if you are of a dirty mind, that could be exactly why this name was chosen.

With “Passage I Melancholia”, we tell the story of a man leaving his home and known world behind in search of solace in the most unforgiving of places. This album dives deeply into the stories of 20th century Antarctic pioneers, exploring their hardships and fervour. This is not a concept album per se, but we drew inspiration from historical personal accounts and the desolate landscapes of the Antarctic. We took that awe-inspiring, freezing abyss and brought it to life.

This is US Metal as it should be played; with conviction and dedication. The guitars really enhance each other’s power whilst still being distinguishable individually. As for singer Chalice, he can reach heights that are almost unnatural for a bloke.

I wouldn’t call myself a Stoner Rock lover or connoisseur, but I do love old fashioned Rock and Metal, and even with the contemporary sound that is to be found on “The Edge” I hear enough that makes me travel back in time when everything was done manually, all those expensive and complicated gadgets weren’t available.

Overall, this was an excellent release. The weighted tones were crushing, as was the feeling on your back. The band wants you to carry these burdens with you forever, and remind you how heavy and painful they are.

Overall, this was a solid listen. Sure, it has a throwback sound, but for those of us who live through those times, it was sentimental. The band is talented…they just need to sharpen things up a bit, and perhaps looking for a new producer.

If “Further” were to drop today as a brand-new album it would undoubtedly be heralded as one of best albums of 2025. As reissue, it could still hold that honor.

Overall, this was a solid listen for me. The band has all of the elements you would want from the genre, and are quite talented as well. It’s just a matter of sharpening their efforts a bit for this to go from a good release to an excellent one.

An unbroken thread of melody carries the listener through an emotional spectrum. Their music exists in that space where progressive metal’s precision and compositional complexity merge with raw human feeling, creating something both powerful and deeply personal. The emotional breadth of IHLO’s sound is its defining strength. The songs give space for reflection, but they also demand release. They capture isolation and connection, despair and determination, collapse and rebirth. By the album’s end, you remember most how it felt. The album resonates in the bones, the breath, and the quiet spaces you carry inside.

The composer is obviously talented, and the album is just diverse enough. Any fans of Extreme Metal will find this to their liking.
