Moss Upon The Skull – Quest for the Secret Fire
September 28, 2024
This was a pleasing album with an uncommon sound, something out of bounds but not too far. What impressed me most was the way that the band controlled an album which seemed so loose at times. This was indeed an outerworldly listening experience.

Occulta Veritas – Irreducible Fear of the Sublime
July 7, 2024
The genius of the band and specialness of the album is hard to describe, although the biography in the introduction covers part of it. It does indeed feel like it is sent to probe your subconscious mind, and what comes back you don’t want to see or hear. Still, it was a valuable exercise, that shows the many dark layers of human existence.

Todesstoss – Das Liebweh-Dekret
July 6, 2024
While this album was pleasing, it was all over the place with a variety of sounds. It is a very unique offering for fans of BM that are willing to throw convention to the wind and explore a bit.

Inconcessus Lux Lucis – Temples Colliding in Fire
May 14, 2024
I like the combination of filthy Black Metal with the Speed and Thrash Metal of the past. Although they aren’t creating anything new necessarily, the sound is authentic, and it blasts right through your ears with fire and passion. These riffs will stick around your head for a while as well.
review
Thanatotherion – Alien Manifesto
May 13, 2024
The complexity of the album is deep, and some listeners might have a hard time with that. However, I found its secrets to be well-hidden, and appreciate the work that I had to do in order to unearth them. Like many I, Voidhanger releases, this is off the beaten path.
review
Dionysiaque – Diogonos
April 4, 2024
This is an uncommon album because the band experiments at unexpected times, while retaining many of the traditional elements that fans have come to enjoy. Their musicianship is also excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed their personal take on Doom.
review
Herxheim – Contrapasso
March 21, 2024
Overall, the album is full of odd time structures, harrowing elements, and a black filth that will cover the listener from head to toe. Fans of Black and/or Death Metal will find plenty to like here, and sounds that are outside the box.

Hadit – Metaphysical Engines Approaching The Event Horizon
February 24, 2024
What sets the band apart from their peers for me is their constant diligence and commitment to finding an unusual sound. Sure, there are common Death Metal elements here, including pig squeals, deep gutturals, and of course, the long song titles that don’t make much sense, but clean vocals and animated bass work? Not so common. It is precisely their willingness to experiment that makes the album as good as it is.

Cerulean – Carrion Angel
January 11, 2024
I was impressed with the band complex structures and unusual take on Black and Death Metal. Obviously talented, the created a color palate of blacks and greys that constantly shifted.
review
The Oldest House – A Worm Through Time
January 10, 2024
I found the album bending between genres of Doom, Black Metal, and even elements of Hardcore at times. There are desperate, hopeless tones that paint a picture of a doomed life, and you have to fight hard against the urge it imparts to overtake you.

Unsouling – Vampiric Spiritual Drain
January 8, 2024
Overall, this was an odd listening experience. Some of the songs were more linear than others, but the level of oddity was high. While I found many of the songs intriguing, the average Metal listener will find them hard to connect with, in my opinion. For these reasons, I can’t give them album a higher rating than it has.

Spectral Lore – 11 Days
December 2, 2023
As I was listening to it, it began to put a fire under my feet, lifted me up, and carried me to the place where so many people died. The images were almost too much to bear, so I returned to the safety of my home. Apathy is a much easier pill to swallow than action.
review
Myaelin – Naesekhnaetri
December 1, 2023
, I can deal with the lack of structure, and the very loose nature of the music, but what struck me as most odd were the vocals. This music is just too eclectic for most music lovers.

Baring Teeth - The Path Narrows
November 25, 2023
I’ve always thought that BARING TEETH is at its best when the music is frantic and overly dynamic. The majority of “The Path Narrows” exhibits those qualities. The album is too front-loaded for me to play it through in one sitting often. There are five excellent playlist tracks on this eight-track album.

Acausal Intrusion - Panpsychism
November 25, 2023
While I enjoyed listening to “Panpsychism,” I felt like it would have worked better as possibly a pair of EPs or a thirty-minute album. It’s easier to appreciate than it is to endure. The chops that these two musicians have are undeniable and they succeeded in making one of the most challenging albums of the year.
review
Bekor Qilish - The Flesh of a New God
November 25, 2023
There’s just so much to process. It is quite rewarding, especially upon repeated listens. This album is metal nerd music for metal nerds and I suggest listeners eliminate distractions for forty-one minutes and dive in headfirst.
review
Midnight Odyssey - Biolume Part 3 - A Fullmoon Madness
November 22, 2023
Overall, this was a good album, but very long, and so in that length the artist runs the risk of having too many songs that sounds similar. It was fairly diverse however, and the spacey elements kept it interesting.
review
Swords of Dis – Melencolia
November 21, 2023
First, there is horror and torture, next there is nothing left of the band’s soul. The album takes you on a journey through your worst nightmares, and leaves you feeling numb at the end.
