Opeth – The Last Will and Testament
November 8, 2024
This album strikes a rare balance between Progressive intricacy, dark storytelling, and glimmers of light that struggle to break through its somber and angry tones. These stories unfold over a meticulously crafted backdrop of shifting time signatures, complex layers, and atmospheric transitions that leave each track feeling like an unfolding chapter in a larger, haunting novel. Each song feels carefully plotted, its emotional intensity mounting steadily, only to shift directions unexpectedly—a trademark of great Progressive music. This album stands as a masterful blend of Progressive ambition and lyrical poignancy, immersing the listener in a carefully crafted sonic landscape. For anyone who seeks music that is as intellectually stimulating as it is emotionally resonant, a powerful journey not to be missed, and their best album in many years.

One With The Riverbed – Succumb
October 26, 2024
It’s the kind of album that lifts you up just enough to breath but then stifles you with thick, black smoke. You only get a fleeting sense of relief. This repeated pattern is one that you don’t even notice, because hope is such a strong feeling. Come and explore the many different layers of sound on the album and decide for yourself how it makes you feel.

Black Oak County – III
October 23, 2024
This album doesn’t attempt to recreate the wheel, but what it does is present a genuine and honest energy from a group of rockers who take no prisoners. I can also hear how well the music would translate to a live audience. 12 songs was just a little too much in terms of overstaying its welcome, but it was a good listen.

Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere
October 19, 2024
The album delivers a stunning display of balance—an artful contrast of light and dark, chaos and control, both musical and existential. It masterfully balances aggression with melody, showcasing a rare ability to create harmonies that soar over deep, guttural growls and blistering guitar work, a testament to the band's technical prowess and deep understanding of composition. The pacing of the album is impeccable, transitioning seamlessly from relentless assaults to reflective, constantly in motion. With each listen, this balance becomes more profound, revealing layers of complexity and nuance that make it one of the most compelling metal releases of the year.

Souls of Ambience – A 1000 Tears
October 11, 2024
This album was excellent. The band showed strong songwriting skills and musicianship within a concept album’s confines, and enough of their personality to shine through. This would appeal to any Progressive Rock fan or just anyone who appreciates substance in their music.

The interplay between melancholy and the album’s character creates an immersive listening experience that feels deeply personal. There’s a sense that the band has poured every ounce of their emotion into the songs, giving the music a soul that lingers long after the final track fades. It’s an album that invites you to sit with your feelings, to embrace the melancholy, and to find strength in the richness of its character.

Virgin Steele - Guardians Of The Flame (Reissue)
October 5, 2024
I have also reviewed their debut album “Virgin Steele I”, and the leap forward from that one is remarkable. Not that they have improved so much in the quality department, as that was already okay on that one, but VIRGIN STEELE has been able to filter down all the angels they were aiming for on that one and brought it down to a few.

Iotunn – Kinship
October 1, 2024
This album strikes an intricate balance between aggression and melody, offering an experience that feels both forceful and refined. The band pours an immense amount of melody into their hardened structures, creating a dynamic soundscape that’s as brutal as it is beautiful. What’s remarkable about this album is its ability to remain cohesive despite its sprawling ambition. They push the boundaries of the genre with complex time signatures, layered compositions, and melodies that rise like ethereal waves above the crushing weight of the music. For fans of extreme metal looking for something that transcends the typical formula, this is an album not to be missed.

Sepulchre by the Sea - Seven Chambers

While “
Seven Chambers
,” certainly isn’t a bad album, it is one that I just couldn’t find a firm grasp to hold on to. There is plenty of talent here and someone else may enjoy it far more than me. I look forward to their next album, despite my misgivings on this one.

Wings Denied – Just the Basics
September 29, 2024
This was a good album and a pleasurable listening experience. I get many of the Alternative and Metal elements which are blended well on the album, but the Progressive elements are more subtle. The band is talented, and they have a propensity for writing catchy songs that stick with you.

Lethal Technology – Mechanical Era
September 25, 2024
Both of the singers are great, and the contrast between their styles is well done. The band is also talented, and considering this is their debut effort on a record label, that is an accomplishment in and of itself. Some areas of critique, however, include the sudden and sharp transitions in and out of the competing passages, and making a stronger synergy on the songs. This comes as the band spends more time together and learns each other’s tendencies, and their willingness to explore.

This is a release that will resonate deeply with fans of atmospheric black metal. It’s a journey, a reckoning, and a blackened experience.

Sidewinder - Talons
September 23, 2024
SIDEWINDER’s sophomore album, “Talons,” like the band’s namesake, is a killer. I want to say something quirky here about getting your ‘talons’ into it, but that might be too much, so I’ll just leave it at a ‘strongly recommended’ and walk out with my dignity.

Maysnow – A Dream Within a Dream
September 17, 2024
The album did have a dreamy quality to it as the band described, and you can tell that the musicians poured every bit of heart into their craft. The one main criticism I have is the overall direction of the album, it just wasn’t clear to me. Then again, Progressive music can leave the listener hanging out to dry, because it beguiles you to use all of your senses, and questions can linger.

Soror Dolorosa – Mond
September 17, 2024
This album drips with ‘80s nostalgia, weaving lush synths and pulsing drum machines into every track. The melodies have a neon glow, but beneath the shimmering surface lies a deep sense of melancholy. With layers of electronic textures and atmospheric pads, each song taps into a longing for something lost—love, time, or connection. The album feels like the soundtrack to a dream you can't quite escape, blending the energy of retro electronica with the quiet sadness of heartache and reflection.

Ascian – Sing to Me, Sweet Void
September 16, 2024
The Doom sound was more pronounced that the Post sound for me, but that didn’t take away from me enjoying the album. Some of the cleans were a bit pitchy, but you can’t deny the power of the gutturals, tearing hope to pieces in front of your eyes.
